Liverpool hero Hamann: I wanted to join Arsenalby Ansser Sadiq9 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool legend Dietmar Hamann has admitted that he wanted to join Arsenal instead of the Reds! The German defensive midfielder played over 200 games for the club in the early 2000s.But when he left Newcastle in 1999, Hamann has revealed that his first choice was to go to Arsenal under Arsene Wenger. It is understandable, given the Gunners were competing for Premier League titles in those years. However, Hamann told The Athletic that he never got any serious interest from Arsenal, which meant that Liverpool was his best option for a step up from Newcastle. He signed for the club in an £8 million deal under Gerard Houiller and became a mainstay in the team for the next seven years. Mississippi State Hype VideoMississippi State suffered a tough loss to Georgia Tech in last year’s Orange Bowl, but all in all, the Bulldogs had a great season. MSU opened the 2014 campaign with nine straight victories, including wins over LSU, Auburn and Arkansas, before falling in a close contest to Alabama. The Bulldogs, in early November, were the No. 1 ranked team in the country. And they posted double-digit victories for just the second time in their program’s history. The 2015 Bulldogs aren’t being picked by many to be quite as successful, but with star quarterback Dak Prescott returning, they may surprise a few people. Thursday, the school released an awesome hype video titled “Relentless” to tease the 2015 campaign. Enjoy, MSU fans:
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confessed he hopes to remain in charge of Manchester United beyond May, after watching his side beat Newcastle United 2-0 on Wednesday evening. The Red Devils made it four wins out of four under Solskjaer , meaning the caretaker manager has equalled Matt Busby’s best-ever start to a United tenure. The visitors had to bide their time at St James’ Park, with the breakthrough coming as substitute Romelu Lukaku made an instant 64th-minute impact after Martin Dubravka spilt Marcus Rashford’s free-kick. Rashford then sealed the points 10 minutes from time, producing a composed finish after good link-up play from Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.Solskjaer has already managed to restore the feel-good factor at the club and he admitted post-match that he doesn’t want to depart at the end of his projected six-month spell at the helm. When asked if he will leave United in May, Solskjaer replied: “I don’t want to.”He went on to address matching Busby’s record, before bemoaning a ‘sluggish’ first-half display from his team. “I’m just thinking about the next game because if you win four you can win another four with this club,” he told Sky Sports. “That’s the challenge, that’s the standard we’re used to.””It was a very professional performance. We never hit the heights that we can do but I felt we were in control, kept plugging away,””It was a great goal again by Marcus and a great reaction again by Rom – good first touch as a sub.”In the first half it was sluggish, it was almost like a testimonial at times – too slow, too many touches and too many square passes and back”But the big, big plus was the clean sheet.”4 – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is only the second manager in Manchester United history to win his first four league games in charge of the club, after Matt Busby in 1946. Everton boss Marco Silva says there is no truth to the rumours he wants to sign Barcelona winger Malcom this month. The Premier League side brought in Andre Gomes on loan and Lucas Digne in a £19.5million deal from the Catalans in the previous transfer window, with both players proving sound additions to Silva’s side.Reports have suggested Malcom is the latest Barca fringe player to be targeted by the Toffees, the Brazilian having started only one game in LaLiga since a €42million move from Bordeaux last July. However, Silva insists there is no substance to the talk around the 21-year-old, telling a news conference: “No, no. Nothing.”Silva made it clear he will not put pressure on Everton to invest in the playing squad this month simply because of a poor run of form, which has seen them win just one of their last eight Premier League games and lose four of their previous five.”We cannot change every week our idea and philosophy as a club if you win two games or you don’t win two games,” he said. “The last result was not good enough for us, but it was a moment and we are capable of changing things for us again and showing our quality. “Not because of that will we change everything in our ideas. Not because of that will I come here and say, ‘we need this, and this, and this, and this’. We know what we can do or not. Let’s see what is possible.”Silva could be prepared to allow James McCarthy and Oumar Niasse to leave, with the players linked with West Brom and Crystal Palace respectively, but there is yet to be any major development in either deal.”I understand the moment. Now is the moment these rumours come to the table. But [there is] nothing new,” he said.”We don’t put more to be loaned or whatever. I want them focused on our squad and to be ready to play.”Until now, the decisions I already take, you know what they are. Even, like you know, the last moments were really busy for us. The time we had between [games] was to prepare for the next.”
Virgil van Dijk is a slight doubt for Liverpool’s Premier League game at home to Leicester City, but Jurgen Klopp has suggested that the Dutch defender will be involved.Van Dijk has started all 23 league games for the Reds this season, winning December’s Premier League player of the month award, but has been struggling with illness ahead of Wednesday’s visit of the Foxes.Former Southampton and Celtic centre-back Van Dijk has played a key role in Liverpool’s stunning campaign, with Klopp’s side four points clear of last term’s champions Manchester City. He has been nursing a virus over recent days and would be a big miss if forced to sit things out in midweek.Liverpool have major problems in defence for the Leicester game without bringing Van Dijk into the equation, with Joe Gomez still recovering from a fractured leg while Trent Alexander-Arnold has a knee injury.James Milner filled in at right-back in Liverpool’s last Premier League game, a 4-3 win over Crystal Palace at Anfield, but he is suspended as he was sent off late in that game, with another makeshift option – Fabinho – another of those to have been nursing a knock. However, Dejan Lovren could come in as the Croatia defender has been passed fit following a hamstring injury.”Virgil was a little ill but he trained yesterday [Monday], so we will see. He will train today, so we will see,” Klopp told reporters.“Gini trained, Fabinho will train today, Trent is getting closer and closer and it looks all very positive, but he will not be ready for tomorrow. Joe is a no.”With Liverpool having been knocked out of the FA Cup, Klopp took advantage of a rare break in his side’s schedule to take his squad to Dubai for a warm-weather break.”It was good we could do that and usually you’d say no games in that time, usually one game in that time would be good, difficult lineup-wise as we needed couple days for the boys and a few players were not a part of training until a few days ago,” he added. “But it was good, we didn’t have to play important cup competitions but it would not have been possible for a lot of players. We had a few more days and now have to show [it made a difference]. But Leicester are in the same situation so it’s not a massive advantage. “It’s just the situation and they can bring back [Harry] Maguire I heard after injury in the last game and so we had a few more days and could wait for one or two players but we have to see if they are available for the game.” Subscribe to Goal’s Liverpool Correspondent Neil Jones’ weekly email bringing you the best Liverpool FC writing from around the web
Matchweek 24 is now behind us and, it was certainly two days of shocking results. Coming into the week it looked like it would be a great one for Fantasy with all of the “Big Six” in what looked to be favourable matches, but Tottenham and Arsenal were the only Champions League-chasing teams to pick up wins this week.Bournemouth, in particular, played the role of spoilers spectacularly well, stunning Chelsea 4-0 at the Vitality stadium. Off the back of that huge win, the Cherries have landed four players in our Team of the Week while the “Big Six” enter just two. Keep reading to see who all has made the cut. GK: Artur Boruc – Bournemouth – 1 Game, 7 Saves, 1 Clean Sheet = 10 PointsDEF: Romain Saiss – Wolves – 1 Game, 1 Goal, 1 Clean Sheet = 14 PointsSuch a strange week was bound to yield unlikely heroes and Saiss is surely the most surprising name on this list. The defender recorded an incredible 14 points against West Ham this week, literally doubling his season total in the Goal game. That having been said, he has started three of the last five matches and, if he does lock down a regular starting, could provide some Fantasy value. Wolves, though, have kept just two clean sheets in their last 10 matches which makes any of their defenders difficult to own.DEF: Charlie Daniels – Bournemouth – 1 Substitute Appearance – 1 Goal = 8 PointsDEF: Harry Maguire – Leicester – 1 Game, 1 Goal, 1 Goal Conceded = 8 PointsMID: David Brooks – Bournemouth – 1 Game, 1 Goal, 1 Assist = 11 PointsBrooks put on a show against Chelsea this week, helping to push Bournemouth to that huge 4-0 win. He has certainly been rounding into form of late with a goal and three assists in his last five matches, but Wednesday’s performance was easily the best thus far.Ryan Fraser tends to get all the Fantasy love based on his inexpensive price and nine assists, but it’s Brooks who has actually been a better value, as he sits just 12 points shy of his teammate while saving you an extra £.6m. The Wales international did come off limping midweek but, if he’s fit, Brooks is a fantastic budget own.MID: Joao Moutinho – Wolves – 1 Game, 2 Assists = 8 PointsMID: Paul Pogba – Manchester United – 1 Game, 1 Goal = 8 PointsPogba continued his ridiculous Fantasy form with yet another goal on Tuesday. Since the hiring of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Frenchman has scored six goals and assisted two more en route to fully re-establishing himself as a Fantasy superstar. His schedule is going to get a lot tougher with Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City all to come in the next six calendar weeks, but when a player is in this kind of form, you should back him, rather than fearing the fixtures. Worst case, he has a bad match and you replace him with someone else that game week.MID: Sadio Mane – Liverpool – 1 Game, 1 Goal = 8 PointsFOR: Josh King – Bournemouth – 1 Game, 2 Goals, 1 Assist = 15 PointsWhile not the Fantasy darling that he’s been in years past, Josh King popped up with a phenomenal performance and two beautiful strikes on Wednesday. He also added an assist to his haul against Chelsea, recording 15 points and winning the title of Goal Fantasy Player of the Week. With two goals and two assists over his last two matches, and news that Callum Wilson will likely be out about a month, it may be time for people to start bringing King back into their Fantasy teams.FOR: Raul Jimenez – Wolves – 1 Game, 2 Goals = 12 PointsFOR: Aleksandar Mitrovic – Fulham – 1 Game, 2 Goals = 12 Points Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.
ANN ARBOR, MI – NOVEMBER 19: Jabrill Peppers #5 of the Michigan Wolverines leaves the field after a 20-10 win over the Indiana Hoosiers on November 19, 2016 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)Jabrill Peppers plays all over the field for Michigan, and had a monster game in Michigan’s 78-0 dismantling of Rutgers. Jim Harbaugh thinks he should win this year’s Heisman Trophy. On top of being part of a Wolverines defense that pitched a shutout and held the Scarlet Knights to a total of 38 yards on the day, Peppers scored two touchdowns and rushed for 74 yards on just three carries, and had an absolutely spectacular punt return touchdown that was ultimately called back.Peppers was a force for Michigan, and his head coach believes he deserves the sport’s highest honor.Jim Harbaugh on Jabrill Peppers: “In my humble opinion we’re looking at the Heisman Trophy winner.”— Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) October 9, 2016Harbaugh also says the New Jersey native, who put together the monster performance in his home state, is the most versatile player he’s coached.Asked Harbaugh if he’s ever coached a more versatile player than Jabrill Peppers. “No.” & couldn’t come up w/ anyone he didn’t coach either.— Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) October 9, 2016″Jim Thorpe! Maybe that’s a good comparison? That just came to mind.” — Harbaugh, a few minutes later https://t.co/G5EsHthBTu— Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) October 9, 2016Not many guys are drawing a Jim Thorpe comparison, even if Harbaugh is a bit biased towards his superstar.Jabrill Peppers is likely running behind Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson in the Heisman race, but he could gain ground if the Wolverines keep winning, and he keeps dazzling on every side of the ball. The last defense-first player to win the Heisman was another Michigan defensive back who also dazzled on offense and special teams: Charles Woodson. Jackson’s numbers may be tough to overcome if the Cardinals win out, but we look forward to seeing Peppers do his best to make it a real race.

Manchester United should be considering a move to bring in N’Golo Kante alongside Paul Pogba, claims Mark Bosnich. He is not the first to suggest that another World Cup-winning midfielder would offer obvious benefits to the Red Devils. The former goalkeeper is, however, the latest to claim that Kante could bring the best out of Pogba at Old Trafford and bring unwelcome transfer talk around the 26-year-old to a close. Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Bosnich told talkSPORT: “In terms of Pogba, and I feel very strongly about this, I would build the team around him.“I think what they’ve got to do is look at where Pogba has been most successful, at Juventus and at the World Cup, and who was playing with him? Well, at the World Cup it was N’Golo Kante and Blaise Matuidi.“So, if you’re looking for players, either look to bring those two in with him, or players of that ilk to play alongside him and bring the very best out of him.”It may be that United lose Pogba before they get the chance to bring in any fresh faces alongside him, with reports of interest from Real Madrid refusing to go away. The France international has hinted that it may be time for a change after three testing seasons back in England, with Bosnich concerned by those comments from a key figure. He added: “It’s a little bit worrying, but you don’t know about the games going on behind the scenes.“I don’t know the lad personally, I can only go on what I see, what I read and what I hear.“He seems to be the guy who needs to know he’s wanted and needs an arm put around him, so maybe it’s just a little bit of that.“Maybe he wants to know the club are 100 per cent behind him, because he does carry the can when anything goes wrong.“But that’s understandable. The best players get all the credit when things go right, but when they go wrong it’s usually the best players and the manager who cop it as well.”Pogba faced plenty of criticism during the 2018-19 campaign, but he did deliver 16 goals and 11 assists to the United cause and also made the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

We’re not doing it the wrong way and we’re having fun doing it.” (You can be the judge on whether that was a subtle jab at Saban and his organization.)Basically, Renfrow appears to be alleging that Alabama has broken NCAA rules at practice. That’s what an Alabama reporter thinks, anyway.“He’s essentially accusing Alabama of breaking NCAA rules on a daily basis at practice,” Aaron Suttles tweeted. He’s essentially accusing Alabama of breaking NCAA rules on a daily basis at practice. https://t.co/XCs9e1Lfw1— Aaron Suttles (@AaronSuttles) January 10, 2019The Alabama-Clemson rivalry isn’t going away anytime soon.

(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)Throughout his years of coaching at Alabama, Nick Saban has gone through both triumphant and traumatic experiences. Although the sting of losing national championships can last for a certain period of time, other moments cause the legendary coach to lose sleep.Suffering a blowout loss to the Clemson Tigers definitely hurts until the new season begins. Yet, those shortcomings aren’t running through the back of Saban’s mind for years, especially since he already has his share of national titles. In an interview with Chris Low of ESPN, the Alabama coach revealed that he thinks back about relationships with players. Any situation from the past where he felt that he didn’t support his players in the right manner is worthy of keeping him up at night. The saga between Saban and Maurice Smith from 2016 is a prime example of an experience that generates emotions of remorse for several seasons. From ESPN:“The thing I lose sleep over the most is not winning and losing the games. It’s about players. It’s about a guy who’s not doing the right thing or somebody you’re trying to get to see the light and buy into doing the right things,” Saban says. “I’ve been coaching for 43 years, and to have what happened with Maurice Smith and his family, that’s what I lose sleep over.“We’ve got 53 players in the NFL and a whole bunch of other ones who aren’t in the NFL and are very successful. But what I lay awake at night and think about is where did I fail a guy like Maurice Smith. What didn’t I do, or what could I have done better?”Saban caught serious criticism for his handling of Smith’s transfer from Alabama to Georgia, where he joined former Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart in his first year as head coach in Athens. He tried to block Smith from immediately playing at Georgia, before eventually backing down. This year, Saban was put in an extremely tough spot this past season because of a quarterback dilemma. While Jalen Hurts was the veteran presence that has shown he can produce, Alabama went with the phenom in Tua Tagovailoa. Ultimately, he didn’t push back on Hurts’ decision to leave for Oklahoma after the year.[ESPN]
