Happy Birthday Captain: Sunil Chhetri, Indian sports’ unsung hero turns 33

first_imgIndian football’s milestone man — Sunil Chhetri, who was born on August 3, 1984, turns 33 today. The Indian captain, who has been one of the most successful yet silent performer for his country over the years was born in Secunderabad.Chhetri has always played the game with passion and dedication and till date he’s the most successful footballer the nation has seen. One might argue that the honour belongs to Bhaichung Bhutia but if you see the former’s achievements, you have to stop and applaud the little guy.INDIA’s GREATEST EVERThe forward has scored 54 goals from 94 national appearances. He’s fourth in the list of leading international goal scorers who are still active in football. He’s 28th in the all-time list and one might not believe but he is ahead of former England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney, who has 53 goals from 119 appearances for his country. He was picked up by the Kansas City Wizards in the Major League Soccer (MLS) but failed to make a single appearance in the American league. He also made three appearances for Sporting Lisbon’s B side  in 2012-13 before finally returning to India. He played for Churchill Brothers for two years after joining them from Bengaluru FC on a loan.In 2015, he returned to his parent club and his stock has only risen ever since. Under his captaincy, Bengaluru FC reached the AFC Cup final, where they lost to Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya. But, that was the first time any Indian club reached the final of the tournament.advertisementBengaluru FC Twitter PhotoHis name is synonymous with Indian football and there’s no denying the fact that he is Indian football’s poster boy. But, does he get the credit that he deserves for doing his work so consistently? If you compare it with other sports persons and sports…certainly not.CAPTAIN. LEADER. LEGEND.Under Chhetri’s leadership and handwork the Indian team has come a long way. Now they are ranked 96th, just two short of the country’s highest-ever ranking of 94, that it achieved in 1996. He’s the second in the list of most capped Indian players with 94 games under his name. He’s second to Bhutia, who has 104. But, he remains half as celebrated as his counterparts in cricket — be it Virat Kohli or women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj.Footballers, no matter how famous he is, can never be as big in a country where fans worship their cricketing heroes. But, during the times of Indian Super League (ISL) and considering India’s efforts to make a name for itself again in the ‘Beautiful Game’, Chhetri’s importance as much as a certain Kohli or a PV Sindhu, whose silver in the Rio Olympics last year brought about a huge boom in the badminton circuit. The 33-year-old’s dedication towards the game is unparalleled but his grounded nature one might say can be the reason behind him not being as celebrated as his peers in other sports. He has been an ambassador of the game in India for more than a decade and is going to leave with a legacy that is going to be really hard for anyone to even reach in India. As he reaches the twilight of his career, the void he is going to leave will be really hard to fill.India has an exciting Jeje Lalpekhlua up front or a flamboyant and fast winger in CK Vineeth but the country will miss the calm and prolific Chhetri once he retires from the game. So, while there is time, people should really move on from just admiration and celebrate India’s greatest-ever football captain.#HappyBirthday to a man who never gives up and never backs down. Bhai, thank you for everything you have been to Indian Football! #Leader pic.twitter.com/q9EWV07xaW- CK Vineeth (@ckvineeth) August 3, 2017Happy Birthday to the National Team Captain, the 4th highest goalscorer in active International Football at the moment.#BackTheBlue pic.twitter.com/X5c047la1H- Indian Football Team (@IndianFootball) August 3, 2017last_img read more

Taapsee Pannu just wore socks with heels, and we cannot keep calm

first_imgAnyone who’s stepped out in public in urban India, and has bothered to look at people around, knows of some cardinal sins of the fashion world. While most of these sins are widely known, we find our beloved celebrities crossing the line sometimes to tread the unchartered territory. Yesteryear actress Rekha, for instance, was once spotted wearing sport shoes with a linen saree while stepping out of the airport in Mumbai. Now, we’re not saying that’s a fashion faux pas–whatever rocks her boat; to each her own–but it’s obviously jarring to see an icon like that do such a shoddy job of her public appearance, especially when she’s not seen making too many of late. Now, joining the club is critically acclaimed actress Taapsee Pannu, who recently wore a pair of white ankle socks with a pair of black, strappy sandals. Yup, for real. Why, Taapsee Pannu, why? Photo: Yogen ShahNow, we’re not saying Taapsee cannot do that; of course she can, they’re her feet. All we’re saying is that socks serve a purpose, a purpose that’s widely different from the purpose sandals serve. Sandals, especially dainty heels like that, are supposed to make one’s silhouette look more poised while showing off one’s pretty feet. Socks, on the other hand are either worn when trying to escape cold or for absorbing sweat when wearing shoes–in Taapsee’s case, we don’t think either is applicable.Taapsee Pannu promoting Judwaa 2 with co-stars Varun Dhawan and Jacqueline Fernandez. FIFA U-17 WC organisers praise Assam authorities

first_imgKolkata, Oct 25 (PTI) Blaming the elements for the last minute shifting of the FIFA U-17 World Cup semifinal between Brazil and England from Guwahati to Kolkata, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) today praised the Assam government for its help during the tournament.LOC Tournament Director Javier Ceppi commended the authorities in Assam for helping the organisers in trying to get the pitch at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium playable, though the match was ultimately taken to Kolkata, fearing that the poor pitch conditions could lead to injury to the players.”…nobody can control the weather and the effects these unforeseen rains had on the Field of Play made it impossible to ensure the safety of players for the scheduled semifinal match. The State Government gave us all its support to try to get the pitch to a playable condition, deploying workforce, manpower, extra equipment and even a helicopter to try to dry out the ground,” Ceppi said in an LOC statement.”Their efforts on this issue were commendable and we feel everyone in the Northeast should be proud of all the measures that Government of Assam put in place to try to resolve this situation,” he added.Ceppi said the organisers were extremely grateful for all the help and support provided by the authorities of Assam.”We have worked with the current authorities from Government of Assam for the past year and a half and they were the reason why Guwahati was chosen as a venue for the FIFA U- 17 World Cup India 2017.advertisement”Their unstinting support and commitment to the event was tremendous and it is fair that they get due acknowledgement and recognition for all the efforts they made to provide all the people of the Northeast the opportunity of enjoying World Cup football in the region,” said Ceppi. “Without the complete support and assurances given by the current authorities of Government of Assam, it would not have been possible to host the tournament in Guwahati. We are sure that with this leadership, Guwahati will keep on competing to become the Sports Capital of India,” he added. PTI PDS CM CMlast_img read more

‘May you bring more laurels to India’: Twitter applauds Vijender Singh on tenth straight win

first_imgStar Indian boxer Vijender Singh on Saturday maintained his unbeaten record as he defeated Ernest Amuzu from Ghana by unanimous decision in the Rajasthan Rumble fight in front of a packed Sawai Mansingh stadium in Jaipur.Vijender, who didn’t have the ideal preparation coming into this bout, didn’t need to go all out throughout the fight as Amuzu proved to be no match in front of the Haryana boxer’s power and reach. This was Vijender’s second fight against an African boxer. He faced Francis Cheka from Tanzania last year in December and won the bout through technical knockout in the third round. The 31-year-old obviously had the advantage of a longer reach over Amuzu and he used it to full effect.Twitter congratulated the Olympic for his unbeaten record in his professional boxing career.Sushil Kumar, India’s Olympic silver medallist, also congratulated Vijender and wished him more success and more name and fame to the Indian.म?र? भा? @boxervijender ?? ??त ?? बधा?!!! य?ँ ह? द?श ?ा नाम र?शन ?रत? रह? म?र? भा?।??????#IndiaBullsRajasthanRumble- Sushil Kumar (@WrestlerSushil) December 23, 2017Many politicians also attended Vijender’s boxing event and took to Twitter thereafter to congratulate him.And the victory mode continues….Congratulations @boxervijender on winning 10th Successive Pro-Boxing BOut, beating Ernest Amuzu and remains WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Oriental Super Middleweight Champion. pic.twitter.com/YK9Va5GCS5- Sunil Deodhar (@Sunil_Deodhar) December 23, 2017Thoroughly enjoyed watching Vijender Singh v/s Ernest Amuzu bout live in Jaipur. Cormier Takes Johnson For UFC Crown

first_imgLAS VEGAS — Daniel Cormier wore the conflict on his beaming face when he got the UFC’s light heavyweight title belt strapped around his waist in the same Vegas cage where he failed to win it a few months ago. While Cormier knew he could celebrate the biggest night of a fighting career that began in poverty and reached incredible heights, the new champion also realized a bigger bout casts a shadow over this achievement.“I have a message for one man,” Cormier said in the cage. “Jon Jones, get your (stuff) together. I’m waiting for you.”Cormier beat Anthony “Rumble” Johnson with a rear naked choke in the third round, dominating on the ground to win the vacant 205-pound title at UFC 187 on May 23.Cormier (16-1) controlled Johnson (19-5) throughout the final two rounds at the MGM Grand Garden to claim the title stripped from Jones, who was suspended indefinitely by the UFC last month after his arrest when police said he left the scene of a car accident.Cormier lost a decision at UFC 182 in January to Jones, widely considered the world’s best mixed martial artist. When Jones’ career imploded last month, Cormier agreed to replace him on less than four weeks’ notice, coming through with a dominant effort and ending Johnson’s nine-fight winning streak. The performance allowed Cormier to celebrate his second major MMA championship, along with his Strikeforce heavyweight title. He repeatedly said he didn’t feel the need to qualify his achievement against Jones’ misfortunes, even while he did exactly that.“That’s a gold belt,” Cormier said, indicating the hardware before him at the post-fight news conference. “That thing is reserved for the UFC champion. I didn’t disqualify myself from competition. Jon did. Jon is the pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter in the world. We all know that, but he disqualified himself from competition.”Jones is expected to get an immediate title shot when he returns to the UFC, and Cormier realizes his cathartic victory over Johnson will ring hollow to others until he beats Jones.“We’re so tied together, Jon and I, and I don’t think that’s going to change until we fight again,” Cormier said. “He beat me last time, but even in that, you don’t stop believing in yourself. I still think I can beat him, and I would love to compete against him again.”Cormier was knocked down for what he said was the first time in his MMA career by a huge right hand from Johnson in the opening minute, but Cormier recovered and survived the round.Cormier then lifted Johnson off his feet early in the second, dumping him onto the canvas and taking ground control for a dominant round that left Johnson blinking blood out of his eyes.Cormier was clinical in his finish, getting control on the ground again before forcing Johnson to tap out 2:39 into the third round.“He did everything I thought he was going to do,” said Johnson, who has revitalized his career after getting dropped by the UFC in 2012. “I have nothing but respect for him. Have you seen the size of his melon? I wasn’t surprised he could take (the punches).”Chris Weidman also defended his middleweight title in the final undercard fight of a thoroughly entertaining show in the UFC’s hometown, stopping Vitor Belfort in the first round with a relentless series of punches on the ground.Weidman (13-0) survived an early scare from Belfort and quickly took control of his third title defense, taking down the 38-year-old Belfort (24-11) and battering his head against the canvas until referee Herb Dean stopped the bout with 2:07 left. The Long Island native walked around the cage with an American flag on his back in celebration.“He hit me with some good shots, but I’ve been there in sparring,” Weidman said. “I was just covering, covering, covering, and I was ready to come back.”Belfort hadn’t fought since late 2013, waiting 18 months for his shot to become the third fighter in UFC history to win belts in two weight classes. The former light heavyweight champion won three fights with spectacular head-kick knockouts in 2013, but his late-career resurgence was colored by his enthusiastic embrace of testosterone replacement therapy, a medical loophole that allowed several UFC fighters to legally compete on steroids until the Nevada Athletic Commission and the UFC eliminated it last year.“He got me in a bad position, and he got some strikes,” Belfort said. “There’s no excuse. He was a better man tonight.”Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone earned his eighth consecutive lightweight victory earlier, apparently breaking John Makdessi’s jaw with a kick to the head in the second round.Former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski also stopped Travis Browne with 19 seconds left in the first round of a fantastic brawl named the Fight of the Night. The incredibly busy Cerrone’s eighth win in just over 18 months should lead to a title shot against Rafael Dos Anjos, who sent Cerrone to his last defeat in August 2013.“I think I might get this title by default sooner or later, huh?” Cerrone asked.Arlovski and Browne are friends outside the cage, and they put on a spectacular show, with both heavyweights badly hurting each other in less than five minutes of frenetic action. Arlovski twice knocked down the heavily favored Browne, who also floored Arlovski with a huge right hand.Arlovski eventually finished Browne upright against the cage with several enormous shots. “I hope tonight isn’t going to affect our friendship,” Arlovski said. “I love him like a brother.”(GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer) TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Nats Whack Harvey, Mets, 7-2

first_imgWASHINGTON — With two men on, Washington Nationals center fielder Michael A. Taylor made a long run for a nice grab of a deep fly ball before bumping into the out-of-town video scoreboard to end the fifth inning.“I was thinking ‘triple’ right out of the box,” Mets batter Eric Campbell would say later.Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez sure appreciated the effort, raising his index finger to point in Taylor’s direction.“You’ve got to show love,” Gonzalez said, “when love is due.”Gonzalez got plenty of defensive help, Clint Robinson’s two-run double provided the biggest blow as the Nationals jumped on Matt Harvey for five runs in the first three innings July 21, and NL East-leading Washington beat second-place New York 7-2.“He went a long way,” Nationals manager Matt Williams said about Taylor’s play. “And that wall comes up quick. But it was a perfect read, perfect angle.”Third baseman Yunel Escobar made a diving stop, right fielder Bryce Harper made a sliding catch, and catcher Jose Lobaton made a stumbling grab in foul territory to back Gonzalez (7-4), who allowed two runs in six innings.A day after leaving 25 men on base and going 1-for-26 with runners in scoring position in an 18-inning victory at St. Louis, the Mets’ troubled offense left 10 men on and went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.Indeed, it was Harvey (8-7) who drove in New York’s runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth.Dialing up his fastball to 99 mph, Harvey retired the last 14 batters he faced after his rocky beginning. He wound up going seven innings, charged with five runs — four earned.“When you can’t find it, maybe you try a little bit too hard to find it right away, instead of toning it down a little bit,” Harvey said.Williams pointed to one particular key: staying away from Harvey’s high fastballs.Robinson, starting at first base for the injured Ryan Zimmerman, drove the ball over the head of center fielder Juan Lagares in a three-run third that also included Mets third baseman Daniel Murphy’s bad throw for his second error of the game.Zimmerman is one of four everyday Nationals on the disabled list, along with Jayson Werth, Anthony Rendon and Denard Span.Mets Manager Terry Collins aligned his rotation to have his top pitchers face Washington, and he didn’t try to hide how important he believes this match-up is. The Nationals opened the series two games ahead of the Mets.“We’re trying to catch these guys, so it’s big,” Collins said. “It’s big for us.”(HOWARD FENDRICH, AP Sports Writer) TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Kroos Scores Late to Give Germany 2-1 Win over Sweden

first_imgSOCHI, Russia (AP) — The desperate world champions from Germany were seconds from losing control of their World Cup fate when Toni Kroos whispered to Marco Reus just outside Sweden’s penalty area. With the score tied in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Kroos seemed to remind Reus of a tricky set play from training that will live in World Cup lore.Down to 10 men after Jerome Boateng was given a second yellow card, Germany rallied for a 2-1 victory over Sweden on Saturday to suddenly revive its title defense thanks to a strike from Kroos that caught the Swedes by surprise and won’t soon be forgotten in Germany.“The fact Toni Kroos put it away is just incredible,” Reus said. “He’s shown that talent on previous occasions but really in this case it was practically the very last opportunity to win this match.”Kroos lined up for a free kick as if he was going for goal but just tapped the ball to Reus, who held it with his toe as the defenders paused. Kroos swung his right foot, curling the ball past a spinning Sebastian Larsson and over the outstretched hand of diving goalkeeper Robin Olsen. The Swedes watched the ball go in, mouths open in disbelief. The Germans ran to Kroos and erupted in emotional relief.Sweden’s Andreas Granqvist, left, and teammate Andreas Granqvist gestures during the group F match between Germany and Sweden at the 2018 soccer World Cup in the Fisht Stadium in Sochi, Russia, Saturday, June 23, 2018. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell)“Happy of course. It was a tough game again today for us,” Kroos said. “We suffered. … If you don’t score an early goal and we have the chances then it’s going to be difficult until the end. It was, but now of course we’re happy because I think we also deserved the victory.”Coming off an opening loss to Mexico, Germany fell behind again when Kroos’ early mistake led to Ola Toivonen’s goal in the 32nd minute. Reus equalized in the 48th. A point for a draw would have been enough to stay alive for the knockout stage, but the Germans would have needed help on the final day.Now Germany has some control of what happens. Mexico leads Group F with six points, and Germany and Sweden both have three. Mexico faces Sweden and Germany takes on winless South Korea in the final group matches.“Of course this was a thriller, full of emotions and a rollercoaster ride right up until the final whistle,” Germany coach Joachim Loew said.Crazy as it seems, all four teams still have a chance to advance on the final day.“There’s nothing strange to get ready for that match,” Sweden coach Janne Andersson said. “We still have an excellent opportunity to qualify.”For 90-plus minutes, Germany looked as if it would enter the final match facing the same possible fate as Spain and Italy and potentially become the third straight defending champion to fail to reach the knockout stage. They played the final 10 minutes without Boateng.Toivonen gave Sweden the lead, but Germany controlled every aspect by playing aggressive and attacking soccer. (AP Photo/Michael Probst)“Something that I did appreciate today was that we didn’t lose our nerve, we didn’t panic after going down after conceding a goal,” Loew said. “We kept a level head.”Reus scored to pull Germany even, finishing Timo Werner’s cross that was tapped by halftime substitute Mario Gomez and caused the ball to pop up perfectly for Reus to finish with his leg.Olsen made a major save by stopping Gomez’s header in the 88th minute and Julian Brandt hit the post in the 90th, but he had no chance at Kroos’ strike.“This is probably heaviest conclusion that I’ve experienced in my career,” Andersson said.AFTER THE WHISTLESweden’s bench took issue with the way some Germany staff members celebrated after the final whistle. There was a confrontation between members of both teams on the sideline at midfield and the two groups had to be separated. Loew said he didn’t see “any gestures or aggressive gestures” directed at the Swedes.Andersson said he was annoyed by what he saw from the German celebration.“People behaved in ways that you don’t do,” Andersson said. “You cheer together, maybe, and you leave your opponents to feel sad, and that is the end of it.”NO OZILGermany coach Joachim Loew showed he wasn’t willing to stay with the status quo, making four changes to his starting lineup. One was due to necessity after central defender Mats Hummels injured his neck in training on Thursday. The surprise was Loew dropping Mesut Ozil from the starting lineup in favor of Reus.It was the first time Ozil was dropped from the lineup in a major international championship in his senior career. He started every game at the 2010 World Cup and was one of the stars of Germany’s winning squad in Brazil four years ago.“It was important to give Ozil a break today,” Loew said.INJURIESGermany midfielder Sebastian Rudy broke his nose when he was caught by the foot of a Swedish player in the first half, Loew said. Rudy had to be replaced by Ilkay Gundogan.GROUP DYNAMICSThe victory puts the Germans back on track to advance to the knockout stage if it can get a win against South Korea and have a better goal differential than the Swedes or Mexico depending on the outcome of their final match.Even if it does advance, Germany may be looking at being the No. 2 team from the group and potentially a matchup with Brazil in the round of 16.—By TIM BOOTH , AP Sports WriterSweden’s Viktor Claesson, left, challenges Germany’s Toni Kroos during the group F match between Germany and Sweden at the 2018 soccer World Cup in the Fisht Stadium in Sochi, Russia, Saturday, June 23, 2018. How Shai Hope held his nerve during tense final over to secure thrilling tie

first_imgShai Hope scored an unbeaten 123 to secure a tie for West Indies in the second ODI against India at the Dr YSR ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.Hope in turn became the only cricketer in history to score two hundreds in two tied games. He had scored a century in this second ODI against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in 2016 which ended in a tie.Vizag ODI: Match Report | Highlights | As it happened | PhotosUmesh Yadav had 14 runs to defend in the last over after a brilliant penultimate over by Mohammed Shami.Umesh started with a perfect yorker just outside off, which forced Hope to dig the ball out and manage just one run. With Ashley Nurse on strike, Umesh bowled another yorker but ended up following him and the ball ricocheted off his pads and raced away to the boundary for four leg-byes.Another yorker from Umesh saw Nurse slogging it from the inner half towards wide mid-on as both batsmen ran hard to come back for the second.Umesh bowled another yorker, but this time Nurse fell to an audacious reverse scoops that went welcomingly in to the palms of third man Ambati Rayudu. Now, West Indies needed seven off two balls. Another fuller length ball saw Hope stroke it through mid-wicket and come back for the second. and brining the equation down to five runs from the last ball.India opted to bring third man in and push point out to deep backward point with a sweeper cover and long-off already in place. The plan was to bolw full outside off.advertisementREAD – India vs West Indies: Was difficult to bowl to Shimron Hetmyer, says Kuldeep YadavKuldeep Yadav, who took three important wickets, said at the post-match press conference that the move was MS Dhoni’s idea.”I’m too young to know,” Kuldeep said when asked if he knew why a new plan was implemented. “I’ve played only 30 games and Mahi bhai has played 300 games. He’s got more experience than me. It happens. He’s more experienced than us. At that time he thought it and he did it.”But the plan did not work out for India as Hope was expecting India to do exactly that and once Umesh bowled the ball full outside off, he carved it over the infield as it raced to the boundary ropes. For the last ball, India decided to bring third man in and push point out to deep backward point. A sweeper cover was already out, as was long-off. It was a field set up for the full wide ball, and Kuldeep Yadav said at the post-match press conference that this had been Dhoni’s idea.”I was hoping that he’d bowl to the field,” Hope told at the post match press conference.”So we knew a wide yorker was coming. I got enough bat on it to get it to the boundary. I was trying to get more bat on it for a six and a win. It didn’t happen. But we didn’t lose the game, and that’s one positive we can take.”last_img read more
