How people see a country is vital in this regard. The image of a country makes an integral contribution in attracting tourists, investors and in building trade relationships,” Dukwana added.The government’s role in this is ensuring the country has enabling policies to attract trade and investment, but South Africans also have to believe in themselves to position the country as a viable destination.“We must be bold enough to face our fears and challenges, and understand what we’re about. In doing that we can become our own marketers. In our diversity we also need to have one identity and be proud of it. Often we’re too negative and hard on ourselves,” the MEC told summit delegates.“I urge all of you to do your ‘national service’ and respond when Brand South Africa calls, so that we can work together to create a truly great South Africa for all.”
23 May 2013The African Union (AU), previously the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), marks its 50th anniversary this week with a series of events aimed at building a common identity and sense of belonging among all people on the continent.On Monday, the Scramble for Africa Conference, involving academics from the continent and the diaspora, started in Pretoria. On Wednesday, a gala dinner pitched as a networking session with African embassies took place in Pretoria, and on Friday Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile will open the exhibition “Cultural Brokerage: Africa Imagined (Act1)” at the Pretoria Arts Museum.The activities will culminate in the Africa Day celebrations planned for Saturday, when President Jacob Zuma will unveil an artwork at the AU’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia as South Africa’s cultural contribution to the organisation’s 50th anniversary.The Department of Arts and Culture, the City of Tshwane and the Africa Institute of South Africa are celebrating the anniversary under the theme “2013, Year of Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance”.According to Mashatile, the anniversary will encourage South Africans to see themselves as part of an African movement for change, while acknowledging the role of the OAU in bringing an end to apartheid.“As the government, we are particularly interested in pursuing a social cohesion programme that will help the people of the country and continent to redefine their social, political and cultural identity in a manner that will give them a sense of belonging and ownership to determine their own future and destiny,” Mashatile said.Promoting African unityIt has been 50 years since the emergence of the OAU and a decade since the formation of the AU.Comprising 54 member states, the organisation brought the continent together to collectively address its challenges, including conflict, social upheaval, climate change and poverty.It seeks to promote an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa that is people-centred and represents a dynamic force on the world stage.Significantly, during the 2008-09 global economic crisis, Africa’s economies continued to expand, and growth forecasts for the continent remain positive.However, the benefits are not reaching all Africans. WASHINGTON — U.S. home construction improved a slight 1.5 per cent in October, but in a troubling sign, ground breakings for single-family houses fell.The Commerce Department says housing starts rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.23 million, up from 1.21 million in September. The gains came entirely from apartments as starts for single-family houses slipped 1.8 per cent last month.A sharp increase in mortgage rates has led to a marked decline in home construction since May, such that ground breakings have fallen 2.6 per cent over the past 12 months.The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage has shot up a full percentage point in the past year to 4.94 per cent, according to Freddie Mac.Permits, an indicator of future activity, declined 0.6 per cent to an annual rate of 1.26 million.Josh Boak, The Associated Press
A national football powerhouse such as Ohio State expects to win every game. This is a stark difference from the aura that surrounds the Eastern Michigan program. The Eagles have lost 15 straight games. In the time since Eastern Michigan’s last victory, Barack Obama was inaugurated, LeBron James “took his talents to South Beach” and the Jersey Shore became a popular tourist site. The last time OSU lost consecutive games was in 2004, when they lost to Northwestern, Wisconsin and Iowa. That was the last season in which OSU did not play in a BCS bowl game. Safety Tyler Moeller doesn’t care that Eastern Michigan has not won since Nov. 28, 2008. “Any team can beat us any day,” Moeller said. “Ohio University proved that in 2008. They gave us a great game. We need to play our game every week and not let go of the throttle.” Are the Eastern Michigan Eagles really as bad as they seem? The team is led by senior linebackers Neal Howey and Tim Fort, who are both in the top five in tackles in the Mid-American Conference. Second-year coach Ron English, former defensive coordinator at Michigan under Lloyd Carr, leads a team that is predominately underclassmen. “He knows us better than his players know us, having been on Lloyd’s staff for all those years, coaching the secondary there at Michigan, and he knew the challenge when he took over,” said OSU coach Jim Tressel. While the broadcast rights for the Indian subcontinent is for 10 seasons (from 2018 to 2027), the IPL digital rights are valid for five seasons (from 2018 to 2022). You go @POTUS! #ShitholeCountries #shithole #America1st,” tweeted Marco Gutierrez, a Trump supporter and Congressional candidate from California.Conservative blogger Stacy Rush dismissed criticism of Trump’s language as pitiful and a distraction from the bigger picture: “It is pathetic our country and particularly the MSM (mainstream media) is wasting time on the word #shithole when we have real issues that need to be addressed.”But many from the worlds of diplomacy, academia and even etiquette experts cringed.“The reality is that when you have to resort to it, it does send a message of insecurity,” said Diane Gottsman, author of Modern Etiquette for a Better Life, who advises against using profanity in either professional or social settings.Trump’s remarks during a meeting on immigration policy that was held at the White House on Thursday were reported by a US senator at the gathering, who said on Friday that the president had used “vile, vulgar” language, including repeatedly saying “shithole.”Trump denied on Friday that he had used such derogatory language. But he was condemned nonetheless in many African nations, as well as in Haiti and El Salvador, and by international human rights organizations.During the 1960s Lyndon Johnson raised eyebrows by saying that, in politics, “chicken shit can turn to chicken salad.” Experts said the public were shocked by the profanity-laced Nixon tapes from the Oval office in the 1970s Watergate political crisis, and that people are less sensitive now.“People have become accustomed to the idea that presidents swear,” said Julian Zelizer, a Princeton University history professor who studies the presidency. “But even with that, I think people still expect a certain amount of formality in public.”Some academic research suggests there could be benefits to swearing in some contexts, from dulling pain to suggesting trust in social situations.Benjamin Bergin, a cognitive science professor at the University of California San Diego who wrote a book on why people swear called “What the F,” said his research has shown profane speech can be perceived as more honest.If swearing kept Trump from storming out of the negotiations, that could be positive, said Timothy Jay, emeritus professor of psychology at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and author of five books on profanity.That was not enough to sway Gottsman, who advises people on business etiquette.“My advice would be don’t do it,” she said. “When we are in a position of power, people look up to us.”
