CNET Facebook is working on a voice assistant that could be used in its Portal video chat device.”We are working to develop voice and AI assistant technologies that may work across our family of AR/VR products including Portal, Oculus and future products,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday. The social network would face stiff competition from tech giants that already have voice assistants, like Amazon, Google and Apple. CNBC, citing several people familiar with the matter, said Facebook has been working on the new voice assistant since early 2018 but it’s “unclear how exactly Facebook envisions people using the assistant.” Facebook’s Portal currently taps into Amazon’s Alexa. Facebook employees in Redmond, Washington, led by Ira Snyder, director of AR/VR and Facebook Assistant, are reportedly leading the effort to build a new AI assistant.This isn’t the first time Facebook has tried to build a virtual assistant. Khaleda granted bail in graft cases

first_imgKhaleda Zia.File PhotoBNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been granted bail in both Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases.Judge of  Dhaka Special Judges Court-5, Akhtaruzzaman on Tuesday handed down the bail order after the BNP chief appeared before the makeshift court at Bakshibazar in Dhaka at 11:00pm.Earlier on 30 November, the court issued arrest warrants against Khaleda cancelling her bail in the cases.The court announced that hearing of the Zia Orphanage Trust case will be held between 6 December and 8 December.On 3 July 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case with Ramna police station accusing Khaleda Zia, her eldest son Tarique Rahman, and four others for misappropriating over Tk 21.0 million that came as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.On 8 August 2011, the commission filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon police station accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abusing of power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources.last_img read more

22 injured as bus overturns on BerhaporeHariharpara Road

first_imgKolkata: As many as 22 passengers were injured some of them critically when a bus they were travelling in overturned on Berhapore-Hariharpara Road on Wednesday morning.All the injured persons were taken to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital by the local people immediately after the incident. The local people took part in the rescue operation before the police reached the spot. Police said that a private bus on its way to Berhampore with 35 passengers overturned near Katabagan area under Berhampore police station at around 10 am. The local people heard a loud thud and rushed to the spot. They brought the injured persons out of the bus many of whom were in traumatised condition. Some of the victims had received serious head injuries. The bus driver applied sudden brake when it overturned. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be confirmed by the police. The incident caused traffic congestion in the area for sometime. The police later removed the vehicle from the place and the traffic movement was restored. The police are investigating if the bus developed any technical snag resulting in the accident. The bus driver reportedly injured in the accident. According to the preliminary investigation police suspect that the bus driver might have applied the emergency brake as biker might have come on its way. The bus was also seriously damaged in the accident. Police also suspect that bus was running at an average speed between 50-60 when the accident occurred. Worldclass autism care township to be set up in Bengal says CM

first_imgKolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day on Tuesday, said that a world-class autism township will be set up soon to provide training to autistic children and adults.In a tweet, Banerjee said: “Today is #WorldAutismAwarenessDay. We must create more awareness about autism among the people. You will be happy to know that a world-class autism township will be coming up near Kolkata where autistic children and adults will receive training, treatment and boarding facilities.” Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataThis comes as a significant announcement for autistic children in the city, as they would get various facilities at the proposed township. The township will be built as a one-of-its-kind initiative by the Bengal government in association with a private firm, on a 52 acre plot at Sirakol in South 24-Parganas at an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore. The project is expected to be completed by 2023. It can be mentioned that the project was first announced during the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) in 2018. The township will also have provisions for training teachers who would be dealing with those suffering from the disorder. The main purpose of the township is to provide holistic development of those suffering from autism. World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognised day which falls on April 2 every year and aims to raise awareness about people with Autism Spectrum Disorder through various programmes. According to a senior state government official, the township will be the first of its kind, not only in the country but also in the world. There will be facilities for accommodating 350 residents, apart from a daycare centre having a capacity of accommodating over 200 children and adolescents. A guest house will also be set up, where parents of those receiving training can stay for a few days. It may be mentioned here that after coming to power, the Mamata Banerjee government has started introducing units for autistic children at various government-run hospitals. Among other medical colleges and hospitals in the state, the NRS Medical College and Hospital runs a unique autistic care centre, where a large number of patients from across the state visit.last_img read more
