Ganta Residents Strengthen Community Policing Amidst Water Poising Rumors

first_imgIn the wake of news of wells being poisoned by unknown persons, citizens of Ganta have begun strengthening community policing in collaboration with the Liberia National Police, Ganta Detail.According to Ganta Police Commander, Sgt. George Payne, the police, along with the community, will work hard to avoid harm coming to the community.Since last week Tuesday, he said, Police have begun regular patrols during the night hours from community to community with the assistance of community watch teams. The fear of the water poisoning intensified early Tuesday, 5th August 2014, in Ganta and its’ surrounding towns after a well was allegedly poisoned in a family compound belonging to  Immigration Officer, Maj. Alfred Yormie.Although the report is yet to   be verified as to whether the water was really poisoned, residents of the compound, and neighbors did notice that the well had been forced open and what appeared as a chemical-like powder was seen sprinkled around the well and in the yard, where the well is located. As of now visitation around Ganta night hours has become very difficult, because every community is on a watch to know who is moving around their community.“We are checking for any strange movement in our community,” said one of the community leaders. The news of poisoning water has caused alarm in the community, making citizens to be even more afraid of this than about of Ebola.Unconfirmed reports reaching the Daily Observer say that in Bahn, there was an alleged poisoning of a hand pump and materials like syringes and a glove were found under a nearby pump close to the Refugee Camp. And in Grand Gedeh, it was alleged that some groups of men were seen going  around in Zleh Town telling people that they have Ebola medicine to be placed in a well, but some of the men were immediately arrested and are currently under detention at the police station in Zwedru.“Yes, we see the Ebola, but I think water poisoning is the one that is killing people and they are putting the blame on  Ebola,” said Mr. Yormie.“If God had not been on our side to lead us to discover the poisoning of our well, we may all have been dead by now,” he added.Tension is said to be building  up across Nimba in the fight against Ebola and about well poisoning and the poisoning of food items such as candy, among others. It is alleged that the four persons who died in Kakata recently, died from poisoned candy, which was given to some kids by unknown persons. However, two persons had reportedly died from Ebola in Nimba, one in Ganta and the other and the other along the Ganta-Saclepea road, while brinh rushed to the clinic. The little child who died in Ganta and another relative  earlier tested positive of Ebola by the Ministry of Health (MOH) team, after their father died from Ebola almost a month ago.  But they did not  transfer them to the center until his death, while the relatives remain very serious.Residents are complaining of the slow response of the Ministry of Health workers in quickly relocating positive cases or expeditiously  removing the Ebola bodies.“Our lives are at risk in this country, because those claimed to be Ebola positive are still living in the same community with other people,” said Yeesah Karto. The body of the man who died while en route to the Saclepea Clinic is said to be lying on the main road close to the town call Yarsonnoh, since his demise on 6th August 2014.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
