Mississippi State Releases Awesome “Relentless” Hype Video

first_imgA Mississippi State player scores a touchdown over an LSU defender.Mississippi State Hype VideoMississippi State suffered a tough loss to Georgia Tech in last year’s Orange Bowl, but all in all, the Bulldogs had a great season. MSU opened the 2014 campaign with nine straight victories, including wins over LSU, Auburn and Arkansas, before falling in a close contest to Alabama. The Bulldogs, in early November, were the No. 1 ranked team in the country. And they posted double-digit victories for just the second time in their program’s history. The 2015 Bulldogs aren’t being picked by many to be quite as successful, but with star quarterback Dak Prescott returning, they may surprise a few people. Thursday, the school released an awesome hype video titled “Relentless” to tease the 2015 campaign. Enjoy, MSU fans:last_img

Although their recruiting process works largely the same as at other schools (with the biggest exception being a lack of scholarships specifically for athletics), they face unique barriers to hauling in top talent, including mandatory military service after graduation, tougher academic requirements and even size restrictions for incoming players.2Guidelines for weight and body fat, for instance, can make it difficult for top linemen to qualify. That’s why, according to the Team Talent Composite, the academies are mostly filled with players who were lightly regarded coming out of high school. But whether because of their emphasis on character and discipline, or just their predilection for triple-option schemes that can trip up the most formidable defenses, these programs have produced far better results than their talent would suggest.Among Power Five schools, the top outperformers are a generally unsurprising collection of well-coached programs, such as the perennially overachieving Wisconsin Badgers, the Washington schools (both UW and WSU), plus Bill Snyder’s K-State and Mike Gundy’s Oklahoma State squads. But ahead of them all might be a surprising team: the Oklahoma Sooners. OU got a reputation for losing big games under former coach Bob Stoops, but Stoops probably should have also gotten more credit for putting the Sooners in position to play those games in the first place, given the way they outplayed the expectations of their recruiting classes.Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, there are programs that recruit like crazy but achieve only modest outcomes, like South Carolina, Texas and Georgia. The latter two in particular are storied programs that recruit off of their prestige, but both teams have found a way to mess up that advantage in recent seasons. There’s also no shortage of teams that field average talent but manage to be awful anyway, like Kansas and Rutgers. All of these schools serve as testament to the importance of coaching and player development in any program’s fate. Although a team like Nick Saban’s dominating Alabama squad can be No. 1 in recruiting and No. 1 in performance on the field, most schools have to make the best out of what they’ve got.How much bang does your favorite school get for its recruiting buck? In this week’s preseason AP poll, for instance, it was revealed that the recruiting machines at Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State and Southern Cal are also the top favorites to win the College Football Playoff. Ho-hum.But although raw talent has a pretty strong correlation with on-field success, it doesn’t completely guarantee it. Teams with good rosters can always let their fan bases down, while others can achieve far better results than we would expect from their recruiting hauls alone. (Hello, service academies!)To get a sense of which teams have gotten the most — and the least — out of their talent, I took ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) ratings for each FBS program over the past two seasons,1Ideally, we’d be able to look at this over a longer timeframe, but the data I’m using for this story only goes back to the 2015 season. and plotted them against 247Sports.com’s Team Talent Composite scores. (The latter measures a roster’s strength by tracking how many highly touted prospects a team has at its disposal.) The overall relationship between FPI and roster talent is relatively strong — recruiting scores explain about 65 percent of the variation in team performance — but some teams have managed to rise above college football’s penchant for predestination. 82AuburnSEC865.4+16.2-3.0 116Miami (OH)MAC407.6-13.4-8.6 26Louisiana TechC-USA444.7+4.4+7.1 65Florida StateACC898.3+20.1-0.8 110PurdueBig Ten523.5-6.6-7.9 85USCPac-12931.8+19.5-3.2 52Colorado StateMW400.7-3.4+1.7 56Southern MissC-USA456.1-1.0+1.2 29Utah StateMW344.3-2.0+6.0 1Air ForceMW57.8+1.4+24.3 43Northern IllinoisMAC392.0-2.3+3.3 63Penn StateBig Ten737.4+12.3-0.3 127RutgersBig Ten593.9-8.6-13.6 128KansasBig 12495.5-14.4-14.2 27West VirginiaBig 12640.2+14.0+6.5 read more

Ohio State field hockey falls short in opening Labor Day weekend

Then-sophomore forward Peanut Johnson (3) advances the ball during a game against Indiana Oct. 26 at Buckeye Varsity Field. OSU lost, 6-5.Lantern file photoOhio State field hockey opened its 2014 campaign with a pair of tough losses against No. 5 Syracuse and unranked Albany. The Buckeyes hung tough with the Orange at home Friday, losing 3-2 in overtime following a fierce comeback. They couldn’t rebound Monday, however, as they were shutout, 4-0, on the road in Albany, N.Y.After trailing for most of the game Friday, the Buckeyes scored two goals within nine minutes to force overtime against the Orange. Syracuse junior forward Emma Russell then sealed the game with a shot from close range off a rebound in overtime.OSU appeared outmatched early, but managed to fight back late behind its veteran leadership.“I think the first half was our eye-opener,” senior midfielder Kaitlyn Wagner said. “But we’re a young team and realized we were getting bullied around.”The Buckeyes struggled to move the ball into scoring position in the first half when they were outshot 17-2 in the first 35 minutes of play. The majority of the action was played on OSU’s side of the field, but freshman goalkeeper Liz Tamburro kept her team alive in her debut, recording five first half saves, which allowed her teammates to strike back late.“She made some incredible saves, and every time a goalie makes a save like that, it gives the team a lot of confidence,” OSU coach Anne Wilkinson said. “As a freshman, that’s a lot to ask.”With 1:57 to play in the opening half, Tamburro’s shield finally cracked. Syracuse’s senior back Jordan Page broke free on the left side of the pitch and scored unassisted to give the Orange a 1-0 lead at halftime.Things changed in the second half when OSU went on the attack. Junior back Emma Royce said the team was determined to get to any ball in question during the second period.“We just decided that the 50-50 balls weren’t going to be 50-50 balls anymore,” Royce, a London native and team co-captain, said. “They were going to be our balls.”The Buckeyes trailed 2-0 after an early second half goal from Syracuse junior midfielder Alyssa Manley, but OSU countered quickly.Wagner scored on a penalty stroke after a Syracuse foul, and with more than 16 minutes to play, junior forward Peanut Johnson broke free and scored from seven yards out off a pass from freshman forward Maddy Humphrey.Tamburro finished the game with 11 saves, tying with the seventh most in single game school history since 2001. The Orange outshot the Buckeyes 37-11 overall, and had a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.“Going into Albany, we need to attack more and dictate the tempo,” Wilkinson said after the loss. But the Buckeyes had no such luck, allowing two first half goals from Albany sophomore midfielder Paula Heuser and senior midfielder Amy Nicklin.Heuser converted on her second goal of the game in the second half, and freshman midfielder Anna Bottino scored on a fast break to cap the 4-0 shutout. The Buckeyes will try to pick up their first win of the season Friday when they’re scheduled to take on Miami (Ohio) at Buckeye Varsity Field at 5 p.m. read more

Liverpool fans taunt Gary Neville after Shaqiris debut goal

People Looks to Capitalize on Newman Death

first_imgBut to publish a special book about an actor who devoted most of his own second act to the community, to sick kids, to others, and not make it even partially charitable smacks of desperation—a money grab at best, and a manipulative tabloid move at worst (People confirmed that the book had been in the works before Newman passed on).Note to People: maybe pay a little less for those Clay Aiken pictures next time and you won’t have to do stuff like this. Perhaps it’s because his death hit closer to home than other celebrities (I live in Westport, Connecticut, just a few short apple tosses from his farmhouse, and worked at the local playhouse the summer he starred in “Our Town”). Perhaps it’s because his philanthropic food company has raised more than $250 million for charities. Perhaps it’s because he was simply a good guy.But People’s announcement that they are putting together a 96-page book about Paul Newman, slapping it with a $12 cover price and rushing 450,000 copies to newsstands leaves a sour taste in my mouth (not unlike, you might say, Newman’s Own Virgin Lemonade, which is lip-puckeringly sweet—just how Newman liked it).A spokesperson for People confirmed that the book is for-profit and pointed out that the magazine has a long history of publishing tribute books—Johnny Carson and Princess Diana, to name two.I realize that publishing is a business, and deaths—however tragic—represent an opportunity for magazine publishers to capitalize on newsstand sales (see: Heath Ledger, and People’s related cover coup). Both People and Entertainment Weekly are devoting their covers to Newman (EW, in a relatively classy move, going with no cover lines), hoping to equal the success they had with Ledger. (People sold 1,816,546 single copies, 20 percent more than its 1.51 million average, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations; EW sold 54,641, 36 percent more than its average.) And I’m sure, in terms of tributes, this one will be top-shelf. last_img read more

Google Stadia gaming at GDC 2019 Everything just announced

first_imgGoogle’s Stadia head Phil Harrison announces the new service. James Martin/CNET When you think of ways to play big-name video games, you probably think of Xbox, PlayStation or Switch. If Google has its way, you’ll soon be considering its Stadia service too. The tech giant announced its new streaming game service at a press event during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on Tuesday. The new service, called Stadia, is designed as a way for people to play and watch gaming together, Google said. The company said it plans to bring together players, broadcasters on YouTube and game developers to create a new experience. It’ll launch later this year, Google said, without saying anything about how much it’ll cost. • See All 3:53 Mar 21 • Google Stadia puts Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC gaming on notice Now playing: Watch this: Apr 30 • How to preorder Oculus Quest and Rift S right now Comments Apr 30 • Facebook’s new Oculus Rift S vs. Oculus Quest: Which VR headset is for you? Game Developers Conference Gaming Tech Industry Digital Media Online Google rolls out Stadia gaming service and controller Google has a controllerThe rumors were true: Google has developed a controller for its Stadia service. But unlike most gaming controllers, which connect to a video game console, the Stadia controller is designed to connect directly to the internet, to ensure the fastest connection.google-stadia-controlThe Stadia controller Claudia Cruz/CNET Stadia streams at high qualityGoogle said its service currently streams video at 1080p, 60 fps. But at launch later this year, Google said it should be capable of 4K video at 60fps, and in the future it’ll be able to output 8K video at 120fps. Google already has partnersThe company said it’s working with Ubisoft, makers of the popular Assassin’s Creed adventure games, and id Software, makers of Doom, to bring games to the service.Google is going to make its own gamesThe company also said it has started a game-making studio, much like Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have done. The company didn’t show off any games it has planned, but it’s recruited industry veterans such as former Electronic Arts and Ubisoft executive Jade Raymond. We don’t know how much it’ll costOf all the things Google did announce, it didn’t put a price tag on any of it. It’s fair to assume the games will likely cost the same they typically do on a standard Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo, but the company’s staying quiet for now.Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, said in an interview after the event that he expects several different approaches, from direct purchase to game rentals where you sign up to play for a certain number of hours.Stadia is designed with YouTube in mindGoogle showed off how Stadia can stream video to spectators, and also offer them ways to join in. One example Google described was a “play” button on a YouTube video that brings you straight into the game on Stadia. Another example was allowing gamers watching someone play a basketball game, for example, to click a link to join in.Google also said Stadia will have a “State Share” feature, where people can share a link that allows someone to play starting exactly at the same spot in the game that they are.Google wants developers to use Stadia tooGoogle said it’s partnered with game development software makers like Epic Games, Unity and CryEngine to ensure game developers can take advantage of its technology. What do Google’s competitors say?Microsoft said in a statement that it’s “a great time to a gamer,” and noted that it’s devoted to offering choice as well through its upcoming Project xCloud service.Sony and Nintendo didn’t respond to requests for comment. Not everyone likes the logoIt’s getting roasted for looking too ’90s.  3 CNET’s Lori Grunin contributed to this report.Originally published March 12.Updates, March 19, 9:55 a.m. PT: Adds details from Google and expectations for the event; 11:55 a.m. PT: Adds info on everything just announced; 2 p.m. PT: Adds Microsoft comment. “Our ambition is far beyond a single game,” said Google’s Phil Harrison. James Martin/CNET The service allows gamers to play standard PC games within anything that can browse the web, including a TV, a phone, a tablet and of course a PC. The games are powered by Google’s high-performance computers, which then stream the images to the web browser in a similar way Netflix streams videos. And they’re streamed at up to 4K high-definition video, at 60 frames per second, meaning animations will move smoothly. Gamers play using a controller Google designed, which connects through Wi-Fi to Stadia’s systems.”It’s seamless,” Harrison said. Google isn’t the only company doing this. Sony’s offered its PlayStation Now game streaming service since 2014, and chipmaker Nvidia offers one called GeForce Now. Instagram has new rules for removing accounts

first_imgInstagram said it’ll notify users if their account is at risk of being removed along with a way to appeal the company’s decision. Users will be able to appeal if their content was taken down for violating Instagram’s rules against nudity and pornography, bullying and harassment, hate speech, drug sales, and counter-terrorism. Instagram said in the coming months it’ll expand appeals. It’s also giving users a way to submit appeals directly within the photo sharing app. Currently, users have to go through the site’s help center. The company will delete accounts right away if they violate the company’s drug sales or sexual solicitation policies. Instagram “Similarly to how policies are enforced on Facebook, this change will allow us to enforce our policies more consistently and hold people accountable for what they post on Instagram,” the company said in a blog post. The announcement comes during the same week that a man suspected of killing a 17-year-old girl posted a photo of her bloody body on what appeared to be his Instagram account. Instagram pulled down the photo and deleted his account but the copies of the image still reappeared on the site and other platforms afterward, raising concerns about how well the social network and others moderate content. The company has also come under fire for not doing enough to combat bullying or shielding teenagers from images of self-harm. At the same time, Instagram and parent company Facebook continue to face allegations that it’s suppressing conservative voices. first_imgA worker arranges food packets inside a retail store in Kolkata.ReutersThe Finance Ministry has decided to hike import duties on 19 non-essential items that include imported ACs, refrigerators, washing machines and others in order to curb widening current account deficit (CAD) and a weakening rupee. The hike in import duties varies from five per cent to 25 per cent and changes in rates are effective from September 27 (Thursday). The aviation fuel attracted five per cent hike. The increase, however, is not expected to increase airfare. As per the revised import duty rate, footwear attracted five per cent hike. Jet Airways bailout plan Lenders to become largest shareholders Goyals stake may

first_imgAn aircraft of India’s Jet Airways lands during rain showers in Mumbai on September 20, 2017PUNIT PARANJPE/AFP/Getty ImagesTroubled carrier Jet Airways seems to be doing everything it can to come up with a plan that will avert its much-speculated collapse. And on Thursday, February 14, the airline approved a bailout plan, which will see its lenders becoming the largest shareholders in the company.Jet Airways said that its board has approved a rescue plan, through which a consortium of banks — led by the State Bank of India — will convert a part of their debt into equity. As per the plan, the banks will convert the debt at a price of Re 1, mandated by a circular of the Reserve Bank of India. In order to meet a funding gap of about Rs 8,500 crore, the airline said that it would allot 114 million shares to the banks, but did not reveal how much debt would be converted to equity or how fresh amounts would be raised. The bank-led resolution plan (BLRP) is “to meet a funding gap of nearly Rs 8,500 crore which is to be met by an appropriate mix of equity infusion, debt restructuring, sale/sale and leaseback/ refinancing,” Jet Airways said in a statement. The proposal seems to have brought a new ray to hope to many and an independent consultant told the Economic Times that this would be a good step for the airline. “Jet is saved. The government is really working to ensure the airline survives and 23,000 jobs are protected.”However, this plan will now have to receive the final seal of approval at the shareholders’ meet scheduled for February 21. The proposal will also require a nod from the Securities and Exchange Board of India and the Ministry of Civil Aviation.Meanwhile, experts in the know have said that the debt to equity conversion is one of the few steps that Jet is taking as part of its rescue plans. Later, it is likely that Etihad, which already owns a 24 percent stake in the carrier, will subscribe to new shares issued and increase its stake to about 45 percent, reported ET.Drop in Naresh Goyal’s stake in the airline With this, founder and promoter Naresh Goyal is set to lose control of Jet Airways as his stake is likely to drop from the current 51 percent to about 25 percent.Speaking of this drop, Santosh Hiredesai of SBI Caps said in a note thus: “Naresh Goyal’s share will come down to 25.5%, Etihad to 12% and lenders will have a majority stake of 50.1%. While this will effectively transfer control of the airline to lenders, the press release is silent on how much of the debt will be converted under the exercise, which remains a key unknown for now, and also who is to bring in potential equity funding that is required to sustain operations and deliver a turnaround.”Earlier, it was said that Goyal was not very keen on giving up his stake and had reportedly even turned to Mukesh Ambani and Ratan Tata for help. the Tata Group has shown an interest in bailing out Jet Airways, but it depended on Goyal and his willingness in giving up his controlling stake. ReutersJet’s fourth quarterly consecutive loss On February 14, the beleaguered airline also reported its fourth consecutive quarterly loss. The loss was recorded at Rs 588 crore for the quarter ended December 31. The carrier has been reeling under the pressures of high fuel cost and cutthroat competition and is also known to have delayed the salaries of its employees. And on Thursday, chief executive officer Vinay Dube thanked the employees for their work.”We are indebted to our employees who, despite our interim challenges, have worked tirelessly to ensure the highest levels of operational reliability and customer services for our guests, in line with our core values,” he said in a statement.last_img read more

24 killed in Iran parade attack Tehran blames US ally

first_imgThere was no immediate claim of responsibility for the shooting rampage dubbed a “terrorist” attack by the authorities, in which at least 53 people were also wounded. This picture taken on 22 September 2018 shows the long-range Iranian missile `Khoramshahr` being shown during the annual military parade marking the anniversary of the outbreak of the devastating 1980-1988 war with Saddam Hussein`s Iraq, in the capital Tehran. In Iran`s southwestern city of Ahvaz during commemoration of the same event, dozens of people were killed with dozens others wounded in an attack targeting another army parade, state media reported on 22 September. Photo: AFPMilitants shot dead at least 24 people including women and children at a military parade in southwestern Iran on Saturday, state media reported, in a rare attack the government blamed on a US ally in the region. “Of the four terrorists, three were sent to hell at the scene, while the fourth who had been wounded and arrested went to hell moments ago due to his severe wounds,” Shekarchi told state television. Khuzestan was a major battleground of the 1980s war with Saddam’s Iraq and the attack on the anniversary parade in Ahvaz had significant symbolic value. The deadly shooting targeted the city of Ahvaz in Khuzestan, a province bordering Iraq that has a large ethnic Arab community and has seen separatist violence in the past which Iran has blamed on its regional rivals. Armed forces spokesman Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said that the dead included a young girl and a former serviceman in a wheelchair. In April, 26 alleged IS jihadists went on trial on charges connected with that twin attack. “This event once again reminds us about the necessity of an uncompromising battle against terrorism in all of its manifestations.” On 7 June 2017, 17 people were killed and dozens wounded in simultaneous attacks in Tehran on the parliament building and on the tomb of revolutionary leader Ruhollah Khomeini — the first inside Iran claimed by the Sunni Muslim extremists of the Islamic State group. “They are funded by Saudi Arabia and attempted to cast a shadow over the Iranian armed forces.” “Those who opened fire on civilians and the armed forces have links to the Ahvazi movement,” Guards spokesman Ramezan Sharif told ISNA. Khuzestan deputy governor Ali-Hossein Hosseinzadeh told the semi-official ISNA news agency that a journalist was also among the dead. He also said earlier that “eight to nine” troops had been killed. Attacks by Kurdish rebels on military patrols along the border further north are relatively common. In a keynote speech, Rouhani vowed to boost Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities despite Western concerns that were cited by his US counterpart Donald Trump in May when he abandoned a landmark nuclear deal with Tehran. But foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said he held a US ally in the region responsible. “Terrorists recruited, trained, armed & paid by a foreign regime have attacked Ahvaz,” Zarif said in a tweet, adding: “Iran holds regional terror sponsors and their US masters accountable for such attacks”. Washington has said it is ready to open talks on a new agreement to replace the July 2015 accord, but Tehran has said repeatedly it cannot negotiate under the pressure of the sanctions. But attacks on regime targets inside major cities are far rarer. – Rouhani defiant -The attack in Ahvaz came as Iranian president Hassan Rouhani was among the dignitaries at the main anniversary parade in Tehran. The province saw unrest in 2005 and 2011 but has since seen been largely quiet. Zarif vowed Iran would “respond swiftly and decisively in defence of Iranian lives”. Police said that five people were arrested at the scene of the attacks and dozens more arrests were reported in the following months — many along the borders with Iraq and Turkey. Trump and Rouhani will both be in New York next week for the United Nations General Assembly. But Iran has repeatedly ruled out any meeting. “The number of martyrs of the terrorist incident reached 24, some of whom were women and children among the spectators,” IRNA said, adding the death toll could rise further as many of the wounded were in critical condition. – Finger pointed at Riyadh -Zarif did not specify which regional government he held responsible for the shooting, but Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards said the attackers were funded by Sunni arch rival Saudi Arabia. Iran has ballistic missiles with a range of up to 3,500 kilometres (2,200 miles), enough to reach both Israel and US bases in the Middle East. In a message of condolence to Russia’s close regional ally, president Vladimir Putin said he was “appalled by this bloody crime.” The United States reimposed crippling sanctions on Iran last month, and a new round of even harsher sanctions targeting Iran’s vital oil sector is set to go back into effect on 5 November. “We will never decrease our defensive capabilities… we will increase them day by day,” Rouhani said at a military parade. “The fact that the missiles anger you shows they are our most effective weapons,” he said, referring to the West.last_img

Mays Brexit talks with Labour stall

first_imgTheresa May`s premiership and Brexit, since 2016. Photo: AFPBritain’s opposition Labour Party said on Friday that talks with the government on a last-ditch Brexit deal had made no progress, as EU leaders said prime minister Theresa May had not convinced them that they should let Britain delay its departure next week.May wrote to Brussels asking European Union leaders to postpone Britain’s exit from next Friday until 30 June. But they have insisted that she must first show a viable plan to secure agreement on her divorce deal in the deadlocked parliament.Labour, which she turned to reluctantly after failing three times to get her deal passed, said the government “has not offered real change or compromise” in three days of talks.”We urge the prime minister to come forward with genuine changes to her deal,” a statement said.Labour Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said his party wanted the talks to go on, and a spokesman for May’s office said the government had “made serious proposals” in the talks and wanted them to continue over the weekend “in order to deliver a deal that is acceptable to both sides”.May badly needs evidence of a viable divorce strategy to persuade the other 27 EU leaders at a summit next Wednesday to grant a delay, preferably on her preferred departure date.Any extension would require unanimous approval from the other EU countries, all weary of Britain’s Brexit indecision, and could come with conditions.”If we are not able to understand the reason why the UK is asking for an extension, we cannot give a positive answer,” said French finance minister Bruno Le Maire. German justice minister Katarina Barley tweeted: “This playing for time must end.”Deep divisions in May’s Conservative Party and government, and in Labour, have led to a marathon of votes in parliament, in which scenarios ranging from abandoning the EU with no transition period to cancelling Brexit have all been defeated.Last Friday, May did the unthinkable by asking Labour to negotiate with her on a deal that might work for both – although some in Labour said she was luring the party into sharing responsibility for her failure.Letter To BrusselsHoping this would satisfy EU leaders, May wrote to EU summit chair Donald Tusk proposing a delay until June 30 at the latest, accepting that Britain might have to hold European Parliament elections on 23 May, which she had hoped to avoid.”The government will want to agree a timetable for ratification that allows the United Kingdom to withdraw from the European Union before 23 May, 2019, and therefore cancel the European Parliament elections, but will continue to make responsible preparations to hold the elections should this not prove possible,” the letter said.So far, there has been little appetite in Brussels for an extension that could create another cliff edge in three months. May asked two weeks ago for a delay until June 30, only to be turned down.Tusk is planning to propose an extension of a year, which could also be shortened if Britain ratifies the withdrawal agreement, senior EU officials said.”The only reasonable way out would be a long but flexible extension. I would call it a ‘flextension’,” one official said.”It seems to be a good scenario for both sides, as it gives the UK all the necessary flexibility, while avoiding the need to meet every few weeks to further discuss Brexit extensions.”But Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said May’s letter raised questions, adding: “We hope for more clarity from London before next Wednesday.”And France, which wants the EU to move on to other business including reforms proposed by President Emmanuel Macron, indicated it was not ready to accept any delay without a clear plan.”If we are not able to understand the reason why the UK is asking for an extension, we cannot give a positive answer,” finance minister Bruno Le Maire told reporters in Bucharest.Second referendum?Sterling fell against the US dollar immediately after Labour’s comments and stood 0.5 per cent down on the day. With time running out, it was not clear how Britain would avoid the abrupt “no-deal” departure that business leaders in Britain and also neighbouring Ireland say would cause huge disruption.Germany, as one of those with most to lose from a sudden dislocation of trade, has been one of those most tolerant of Britain’s turmoil.Justice Minister Barley tweeted that “there can only be an extension with a clear direction”, but also proposed a potential way out by adding: “This includes the question of a second referendum.”The idea of asking Britons – who voted by 52 per cent to 48 to leave the EU three years ago – to confirm or reject any divorce deal has been gaining ground in Britain.Yet May herself and many lawmakers in both main parties are strongly opposed, saying it would betray voters and undermine democracy, especially if it offered an option to stay in the EU.Both main parties made commitments after the referendum to deliver Brexit, but they never settled on a plan for how to leave or what future relationship to seek.May long insisted that her plan – quitting all EU institutions, with a 21-month standstill period to negotiate a bespoke free trade deal – was the only viable one. But it still split her cabinet and infuriated the most eurosceptic of her Conservatives.Labour wants closer ties than May has sought, including a customs union, which she has so far ruled out. Many Labour members of parliament insist that any agreement must be put to a second public vote.last_img

Kremlin Trump Invited Putin To White House But No Date Set

first_img Share Alexei Nikolsky/APRussian President Vladimir Putin gives his annual state of the nation address in Moscow on Thursday. An aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump invited the Russian leader to the White House when they spoke by telephone last month, but the two countries haven’t started any preparations for such a visit.Trump and Putin had a telephone conversation on March 20 in which Trump congratulated Putin on winning the Russian presidential election two days earlier. The White House and the Kremlin said at the time the two presidents discussed meeting in person.Trump specifically invited Putin to the White House during the call, Putin aide Yuri Ushakov told Russian news agencies Monday. However, their governments didn’t have time to start arranging a meeting before the United States joined Britain and more than two dozen allies in sanctioning Russia over the nerve-agent poisoning of a Russian ex-spy in England, Ushakov said.White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that Trump invited Putin to Washington during the call, but said the White House was among “a number of potential venues” the two leaders discussed for a bilateral meeting.“As the President himself confirmed on March 20, hours after his last call with President Putin, the two had discussed a bilateral meeting in the ‘not-too-distant future’ at a number of potential venues, including the White House,” Sanders said, adding that the administration had no further comment on the matter. Some Republican lawmakers criticized Trump for making the congratulatory call to Putin. Trump defended his decision on Twitter, saying President Barack Obama did the same in 2012.During the call, Trump didn’t raise Russia’s meddling in U.S. elections or its suspected involvement in the poisoning of the former spy and his daughter in Britain.last_img read more

Cop Cars Targeted in Sex Assault Case

first_imgBy Michelle Richardson, Special to the AFROThe Baltimore Police Department (BPD) is investigating a sex assault allegation within their own department. In a written statement, police spokesman Matt Jablow confirmed 115 of the department’s patrol cars have been put out of service while the investigation continues.More than 100 Baltimore City Police cars have been taken out of commission during the investigation of a sexual assault within the department. (Photo Credit: Pinterest)Jablow also confirmed that a woman reported the assault on June 2, but did not say that the act occurred in a patrol car. Jablow did acknowledge the woman was in a patrol car at some point.Police would not say when the assault occurred or the specific allegations that were reported but according to a memo sent to officers within the department and obtained by local television station WJZ, the victim reported that she was picked up by a man named “Rick” who appeared to be a police officer. The woman said she was picked up near the Charles Village Pub and taken to a residential area near Camden Yards- where she was forced to have sex-before being taken back to the Charles Village Pub.The woman then went into a hospital and reported the sex assault.According to Jablow, Investigators will not be processing all of the cars for evidence, but are holding them. Jablow said he expected many to be released back into service “relatively soon,” and that the department has 415 patrol cars in total.Until cars are released upon processing, “some officers will have to double up,” meaning there would be two officers to one car so that patrol efforts would not be affected.Dozens of patrol vehicles sat unused in the lots of multiple police district stations Monday morning blocked off by yellow tape. Jablow said the department was processing vehicles all across the city. Some advocates in the city believe the investigation should be conducted by a third party as to keep the case transparent and make sure there are no cover up’s.“When the police engage in sexual violence, be that sexual harassment, coercion or outright sexual assault, the power dynamic is such that it adds extra consequences should the police officer be rebuffed,” said Jacqueline Robarge, head of Power Inside, to WJZ.“The victims are least likely to be believed and most likely to be highly vulnerable.”“It’s a particularly devastating trend, she said, given the power dynamics at play, which make victims fear reprisal if they talk, from the very people meant to protect them.”Police did not say how long the investigation will take but they are “trying to get patrol vehicles back on the street as soon as possible.”last_img read more
