Indias restaurant business gathers steam after 2 years

The industry gained momentum after two years of sluggish growth.Stocks of three listed restaurant companies in India touched 52-week highs in August and the market value of Jubilant FoodWorks jumped 44 percent over the past three months to about 8,880 crore on Thursday, Economic Times reported.Earlier this month, Indian based Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd which operates Domino’s and Dunkin Donuts said it will pump in Rs 100 crore to revive the food products and packaging for Domino’s in India. The company also said it will expand about 50 stores this year.The focus on delivering “better value for money and innovation” contributed to a growth uptick, along with reduction of losses, controlling costs and driving efficiencies, which led to higher operating margins, said Pratik Pota, chief executive, Jubilant, while announcing the June quarter earnings last month.The upgraded strategies pushed Jubilant to grow 6.5 percent in same store sales in the quarter that ended on 30 June 2017 which was the highest in two years.Westlife Developments sales also surged almost 14 percent in the quarter ended in June 2017, compared to last year, and same-store sales surged 9 percent, which was the fastest in four years. Photo: AFPA suicide bombing Wednesday on a camp grouping former rebels and pro-government militia in troubled northern Mali left 40 people dead, UN and local sources told AFP.The president’s office ordered three days of national mourning following the attack, the worst in the country in recent years.A member of the UN peacekeeping mission MINUSMA, who asked not to be identified, initially put the death toll at 37 but hospital sources later said 40 people had been killed and 60 hurt.The camp is located in Gao, a former bastion for Malian rebels and Islamist fighters who together seized control of much of the country’s vast arid north in early 2012.It was set up under a 2015 peace deal signed between the government and various militia and rebel groups following a French-led international military intervention that was launched in 2013 but which is still in place.The attack occurred as former rebels in the Tuareg-led CMA movement and ex members of a pro-government militia prepared to go on a joint patrol, under the terms of the peace accord.Implementation of the peace accord has been piecemeal with insurgents still active across large parts of the region.“The suicide bomber came in a vehicle and blew himself up,” the MINUSMA source said.The attack took place at 8:40 am (local and GMT) as the former rival groups “were due to soon leave on a joint patrol,” the source added.The camp is close to Gao airport, a key transport hub, which was closed briefly in early December following a suicide attack blamed on jihadists.Fighting broke out following the attack between armed groups, leaving at least one person dead and a dozen injured.A car bomb destroyed prefabricated hangars used by the mission’s aircraft, MINUSMA said at the time, and damage to the installations and debris on the runway made the airport temporarily unusable.last_img read more

first_imgPeople vote behind booths at a polling station in Bangkok on 2 February 2014. — Photo: ReutersThailand will hold a much-delayed general election on 24 February 2019, the election commission said on Tuesday, after the junta lifted a ban on political activity it imposed after taking power in a coup in 2014.The junta imposed the strict ban on political activity citing the need for order after months of street protests against the democratically elected government of former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra.The election, which many hope will restore democracy in Southeast Asia’s second-biggest economy, will likely pit the populist political movement backed by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and supported by many in rural areas against the military and royalist establishment.The Bangkok-based establishment seized power in successive coups in 2006 and 2014 and now has its own proxy political parties.The junta began easing the ban in September, when it allowed political parties to resume organising ahead of an election expected in February.It still retains sweeping powers to maintain law and order despite lifting the ban, including conducting searches, freezing assets, and making arrests.The election commission confirmed the Feb. 24 election date on Tuesday, just before a statement announcing the ban on political activity had been lifted was published in the Royal Gazette.“The people and political parties will be able to take part in political activities during this period leading up to the election in accordance with the constitution,” the statement said..Thailand last held a successful election in 2011 but the election commission said it was ready to go ahead with the 24 February poll.“The lifting of the ban means political activities can resume, including political campaigning, but this has to be done under the law,” deputy election commission secretary-general Sawang Boonmee told Reuters.last_img read more

And now with two always online smartphones in use for every nine people on the planet, according to Business Insider, there appears to be no satisfying the information consumption of hyperconnected users. We are past the age of “smart” and moving into the age of “smarter.”This deluge of always-on technology has also created a wave of disruptive applications that are empowering today’s consumers as never before. But customer service has been left huffing, puffing and lagging behind. With 26 billion devices projected to be connected via the Internet of Things by 2020, a blender might issue an alert before it’s going to break or a furnace may dispatch an email indicating it needs servicing before the owner knows it does. It’s like “nesting” the customer: the gathering data through all points of engagement that the individual has with a company so as to anticipate his or her needs and create smarter experiences.The future of customer care will be a completely synchronous response, able to call upon any resource, any individual and any piece of data to deliver an experience that meets that consumer expectation. Once they get connected, we may have three times as many good ideas and amazing new services built that will benefit everyone around the world.”On artificial intelligenceIf Facebook’s ability to recognize and tag individuals in photos freaks you out, you won’t like what’s coming. “Our goal is to build AI systems that are better than humans at our primary senses: vision, listening, etc.,” Zuckerberg wrote. “For vision, we’re building systems that can recognize everything that’s in an image or a video. This includes people, objects, scenes, etc. These systems need to understand the context of the images and videos as well as whatever is in them.”On virtual realityLast year, Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion. So what are Zuckerberg’s plans for the company? In part, Zuckerberg says we can expect to see the social network use virtual reality to enhance online communication: “Just like we capture photos and videos today and then share them on the internet to let others experience them too, we’ll be able to capture whole 3D scenes and create new environments and then share those with people as well. You’ll just be able to think of something and your friends will immediately be able to experience it too if you’d like.
