A wake is scheduled for October 21 in New York at the Frank E. Campbell funeral home from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral will be held Wednesday, Oct. 22 at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York at 10:00 a.m.Reilly founded Primedia (then K-III Communications) in 1989 in partnership with Kohlberg, Kravis Roberts & Co, creating one of the country’s largest publishing companies through the aggregation of special-interest magazines, including, at the time, New York magazine, Soap Opera Digest and hundreds of other titles. “If you stay in the niches, you’re fine,” Reilly once told the New York Times.(In 1996, Reilly oversaw the controversial dismissal of New York editor Kurt Andersen, who had written “several unflattering articles” about friends of Primedia owner Henry R. Kravis.)Reilly, though, was forced out by KKR in 1999.Post-PrimediaIn 2001 Reilly partnered with Providence Equity Partners, forming Aurelian Communications, which acquired F+W Publishing for $130 million the following year. F+W was sold in 2005 for $500 million.Reilly broke into publishing as president of Macmillan, Inc. in 1980. He also served on the board of directors at a number of companies and institutions, including FMC Chemicals, WNET, Barnes & Noble, Harvard Business School Publishing and was a trustee of the University of Notre Dame.He founded Summit Business Media in 2006 through a partnership with Wind Point Partners, which acquired Highline Media and Pfingsten Publishing in November of that year.Reilly stepped down as CEO of Summit last year, relinquishing the role to Andy Goodenough. He retained the title of chairman.”Going into the formation of Summit in November 2006, my plan was to drive the initial growth of the business for several years as CEO, and then step back to the Chairman role,” Reilly said at the time. “I am delighted to be able to report that Summit, in less than two years, is off to a great start and has taken its place as a major B2B media company with more than 26 magazine titles, 150 reference books and electronic products and 100 live events.”Reilly was a deal man at heart. In 1998 he told attendees at the American Magazine Conference that he “welcomed a recession because it might allow him to snatch up some new properties.”And, it appears, Reilly remained a shrewd investor until the end. According to the New York Observer, Reilly recently sold his East River mansion—a home comprised of two converted townhouses—for $32.5 million, well above its $25 million asking price.Reilly had paid $5.1 million for the properties in the 1990s before combining them. The Ram HD is properly handsome, and these days that seems like a weird thing to say, considering how “meh” the Ford Super Duty is, and how “oh heavens no” the Chevy Silverado HD is. The body is literally slick, too, with a decent drag coefficient of 0.409, which Ram claims is the best in the segment. If you want to look properly beefy, opt for the Power Wagon, which is the Ram HD’s most off-road-friendly variant. It’s taller than the standard Ram, with a special suspension for off-roading, locking differentials, a disconnecting sway bar and a 12,000-pound Warn winch. It also has a 360-degree camera to help navigate around obstacles. Despite the new kit, the truck is 28 pounds lighter than before.Under the body is a brand new frame made of 98.5 percent high-strength steel. It has six crossmembers, fully boxed rear rails and it’s ready for both fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitches. Despite all the beefiness, a good deal of which is necessary when your truck makes one thousand torques, use of lightweight materials results in a truck that’s up to 143 pounds lighter than before. The interior of the Ram HD borrows the same updates from its light-duty sibling. There’s a nice amount of layering on the dashboard, with plenty of storage space obvious as the eye moves downward. There’s still a healthy amount of physical switchgear, even when the infotainment screen expands to epic proportions.Enlarge ImageApparently, it is possible to make a heavy-duty truck that doesn’t look bad. Ram Good tech for a truckSpeaking of screens, the Ram 1500’s monster 12-inch Uconnect infotainment screen is available, but as with the 1500 before it, it’s not standard on every trim. The big boy can display either one page across the height of the screen, or it can run two applications simultaneously. Uconnect is one of our favorite systems across the industry, so this is definitely a good thing. A second, 7-inch screen in the gauge cluster is also available. The tech doesn’t end there. The interior rocks active noise cancellation and special acoustic glass designed to minimize unwanted noises — Ram claims this updated HD model reduces interior noise by 10 decibels. Even the HVAC system has been tweaked to deliver more air with less noise. Electric heating elements are tucked into the vents to deliver warm air faster in the winter.USB ports are all over the darn place, including Type-C ports. You can also kit out the interior with up to three 115-volt plugs, all of which can handle up to 400 watts for charging or powering various items. On the safety front, the Ram HD can be optioned with automatic emergency braking, a 360-degree camera and a second rearview camera that looks into the bed. The truck can also monitor up to six tire pressures on the truck and an additional 12 tires for a trailer. The Ram 3500 has unique parking sensors designed to work with dually rear ends. That monster output comes as part of an optional 6.7-liter Cummins diesel I6, which also makes 400 horsepower. Yet, the engine weighs some 60 pounds less than its previous iteration, thanks to a new cast-iron cylinder head, lighter pistons, new connecting rods and bearings, in addition to an all-new exhaust manifold and tweaked variable-geometry turbocharger.Of course, there are other engines on offer for the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty. The base engine is a 6.4-liter V8 putting out 410 hp and 429 lb-ft. If you’re after diesel, but not the full-bore kit, there’s another Cummins on offer with 370 hp and 850 lb-ft.In terms of transmissions, the big-boy Cummins mates to a six-speed Aisin automatic that’s built specifically to handle all that torque. The other, less powerful Cummins variant uses a different six-speed automatic, while the gas V8 hooks up to an eight-speed automatic. So what does that translate to in terms of capability? To put it brusquely, it has a crapload of capability. The Ram HD will haul up to 7,680 pounds in the bed, and it will tow up to 35,100 pounds. reading • 2019 Ram Heavy Duty contorts pavement with 1,000 lb-ft of torque Trucks May 14 • History of the Toyota Supra, a Japanese sports car legend 2019 Ram HD brings a handsome face, 1,000 lb-ft of torque… Comment • Tags 99 Photos Ram
Decking up, gathering some friends and going to a fancy restaurant that serves mouth-watering dishes equals a Sunday well-spent. On the other hand, eating out is also a hot option for people who get hardly any time to cook due to severe pressure from work and personal life. While visiting a nice restaurant still wins hands down, in-house consumption of equally mouth-watering delicacies for a lot less than what the restaurant charges is slowly catching people’s fancy.Bengaluru, which sees a huge influx of people from other states of India every year, has many such home-chefs whose businesses are flourishing.Advertising professional Pramod Shankar and his wife Lakshmi, serve a delightful five-course breakfast to guests. It consists of traditional items seen in a Kerala breakfast: a variety of puttus with kadala curry, appams with vegetable stew, papads fried in coconut oil, “adai” – a steamed banana dish, and “sulaimani” – a Malabar-style black tea with lime and mint.To enhance the feeling of eating at home, the couple plays old Malayalam film songs in the background, and has decorated the living room with lamps and jasmine bouquets, Bangalore Mirror reported.Originally from Cochin, Pramod and Lakshmi started their business with food stalls at the Sunday Soul Sante flea market in 2009. Then, hosting a wedding sadya a few years ago, where everyone praised their cooked dishes, the couple got the idea of a home-dining business.Since last year, the couple has hosted five such breakfasts, but look forward to expand the business once they move into their new and larger house in Koramangala. While Bengaluru is still in the early stages of this business compared to Mumbai and Delhi, several home-dining chefs are coming forward, generating a lot of interest. There are several platforms that are trying to bring home chefs in direct contact with customers. Califormia-based “Travelling Spoon” (TS) is one such platform, which has tied up with home chefs from around the world.”Our goal is to offer a high-quality curated selection of vetted hosts who offer travellers exceptional experiences. We feature our hosts online and allow travellers to book those experiences directly,” said Aashi Vel, one of the founders of TS.Telecom professional Archana Rajesh and homemaker Asha George are the only two chefs in Bengaluru with whom TS has tied up. Although neither of them has hosted a meal at home yet, Vel said Archana has already planned her menu: a traditional Gowda meal costing Rs 1,000-1,200 per person.Interestingly, TS screens home chefs before giving them a chance to serve their delicacies. For example, Archana had to provide extensive details after applying for the TS job that appeared in a travel magazine, then give a Skype interview and finally host a TS person at home.Outside of India, other countries have also taken up this business. For instance, in Paris, an Italian family runs the business at their small flat. Their menu includes aubergine pancakes, a kind of Neapolitan potato pie and meatballs with three kinds of pasta. The wine is carefully picked out, BBC reported.Dining out would cost more than €80 in a normal Paris restaurant, but the Italian couple charge guests only €25 each. This trend of diners around the world choosing home-cooked delicacies over an expensive visit to a restaurant is making eateries jittery over sales, as they are rushing to call it “illegal”.Didier Chenet, President of the main Paris restaurateurs’ union “Synhorcat”, has appealed to the French government to take action against home chefs and stop them, claiming bistros and brasseries are putting them out of business.”Today, many restaurants in France are on a knife-edge because of the economic crisis. Losing just half a dozen customers can spell disaster,” he said.”There are people out there offering a service which is identical to restaurants: a choice of starters, main courses, desserts, wine, the works. But they pay no rent, no staff, no taxes — it is completely illegal,” he added.Synhorcat estimated that there are 3,000 home-chefs in France. It put up two arguments against them: first, that home-dining business is a part of the black economy, and second, hygiene and safety rules are being broken.”If the government doesn’t do something to stop the underground restaurants, it will be a disaster,” said Chenet.
A worker arranges food packets inside a retail store in Kolkata.ReutersThe Finance Ministry has decided to hike import duties on 19 non-essential items that include imported ACs, refrigerators, washing machines and others in order to curb widening current account deficit (CAD) and a weakening rupee. The hike in import duties varies from five per cent to 25 per cent and changes in rates are effective from September 27 (Thursday). The aviation fuel attracted five per cent hike. The increase, however, is not expected to increase airfare. As per the revised import duty rate, footwear attracted five per cent hike. Hike imposed on AC, refrigerator, washing machine, household items of plastics (tableware and kitchenware), office stationery and others may see public spending a little money from now. Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley.ReutersIt needs to be noted that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley while announcing measures to increase capital inflows and check rupee volatility earlier this month, had said that an extensive policy had been made to cut non-essential imports and boost exports. The move comes against the backdrop of the CAD touching 2.4 percent in the June quarter. An aircraft of India’s Jet Airways lands during rain showers in Mumbai on September 20, 2017PUNIT PARANJPE/AFP/Getty ImagesTroubled carrier Jet Airways seems to be doing everything it can to come up with a plan that will avert its much-speculated collapse. And on Thursday, February 14, the airline approved a bailout plan, which will see its lenders becoming the largest shareholders in the company.Jet Airways said that its board has approved a rescue plan, through which a consortium of banks — led by the State Bank of India — will convert a part of their debt into equity. As per the plan, the banks will convert the debt at a price of Re 1, mandated by a circular of the Reserve Bank of India. In order to meet a funding gap of about Rs 8,500 crore, the airline said that it would allot 114 million shares to the banks, but did not reveal how much debt would be converted to equity or how fresh amounts would be raised. The bank-led resolution plan (BLRP) is “to meet a funding gap of nearly Rs 8,500 crore which is to be met by an appropriate mix of equity infusion, debt restructuring, sale/sale and leaseback/ refinancing,” Jet Airways said in a statement. The proposal seems to have brought a new ray to hope to many and an independent consultant told the Economic Times that this would be a good step for the airline. “Jet is saved. The government is really working to ensure the airline survives and 23,000 jobs are protected.”However, this plan will now have to receive the final seal of approval at the shareholders’ meet scheduled for February 21. The proposal will also require a nod from the Securities and Exchange Board of India and the Ministry of Civil Aviation.Meanwhile, experts in the know have said that the debt to equity conversion is one of the few steps that Jet is taking as part of its rescue plans. Later, it is likely that Etihad, which already owns a 24 percent stake in the carrier, will subscribe to new shares issued and increase its stake to about 45 percent, reported ET.Drop in Naresh Goyal’s stake in the airline With this, founder and promoter Naresh Goyal is set to lose control of Jet Airways as his stake is likely to drop from the current 51 percent to about 25 percent.Speaking of this drop, Santosh Hiredesai of SBI Caps said in a note thus: “Naresh Goyal’s share will come down to 25.5%, Etihad to 12% and lenders will have a majority stake of 50.1%. While this will effectively transfer control of the airline to lenders, the press release is silent on how much of the debt will be converted under the exercise, which remains a key unknown for now, and also who is to bring in potential equity funding that is required to sustain operations and deliver a turnaround.”Earlier, it was said that Goyal was not very keen on giving up his stake and had reportedly even turned to Mukesh Ambani and Ratan Tata for help. the Tata Group has shown an interest in bailing out Jet Airways, but it depended on Goyal and his willingness in giving up his controlling stake. ReutersJet’s fourth quarterly consecutive loss On February 14, the beleaguered airline also reported its fourth consecutive quarterly loss. The loss was recorded at Rs 588 crore for the quarter ended December 31. The carrier has been reeling under the pressures of high fuel cost and cutthroat competition and is also known to have delayed the salaries of its employees. And on Thursday, chief executive officer Vinay Dube thanked the employees for their work.”We are indebted to our employees who, despite our interim challenges, have worked tirelessly to ensure the highest levels of operational reliability and customer services for our guests, in line with our core values,” he said in a statement.

Citation: E-mail use model appears to follow “Clash of Civilizations” prediction (2013, March 8) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2013-03-e-mail-clash-civilizations.html (Phys.org) —Researchers at Stanford University have built a model based on the frequency of e-mail interactions between groups of users of Yahoo! e-mail throughout the world. In studying their results, they have found, as they report in their paper they’ve uploaded to the preprint server arXiv, it appears to adhere to societal boundaries as described by Samuel Huntington’s 1992 book “The Clash of Civilizations.” The Mesh of Civilizations. Source: Yahoo! email dataset. Rescaled densities. Only top 1,000 densities displayed. To that end, we mapped the locations of the world’s countries in global email networks to see if we could detect cultural fault lines. Using IP-geolocation on a worldwide anonymized dataset obtained from a large Internet company, we constructed a global email network. In computing email flows we employ a novel rescaling procedure to account for differences due to uneven adoption of a particular Internet service across the world. Our analysis shows that email flows are consistent with Huntington’s thesis. In addition to location in Huntington’s “civilizations,” our results also attest to the importance of both cultural and economic factors in the patterning of inter-country communication ties.via Arxiv Blog This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. © 2013 Phys.org Huntington famously suggested in his book that future wars would revolve around cultural and religious differences and even offered a list of groups of people in them: Sinic, Hindu, Islamic, Latin American, Western, Orthodox, African and Buddhist. The researchers at Stanford, led by Bogdan State, didn’t set out to create a model that would reflect Huntington’s vision, but instead found it came about on its own after the data was compiled and graphed. Their model is based on over ten million e-mail messages sent from Yahoo! users the world over. To show the degree of interaction between groups, the team used nodes and lines between them—the more transactions between groups, the closer they appear together on the model. They also carefully note that only Yahoo! users that agreed to have their data used in the study were included. To form geographic areas, the team compared IP numbers attached to messages with the location noted in a user’s profile, using only those that coincided. The resulting color-coded graphic model offers near instant visual clues regarding groups bound together by culture and perhaps religion. Perhaps more importantly it also shows boundaries, which State and his team claim, resemble the model first proposed by Huntington. Western nodes are clustered to form a single group with just a few outliers, for example, as are others such as those deemed Islamic, or South American. The model doesn’t hint at tensions between groups of course, but does seem to indicate that groups tend to communicate more via e-mail with others in their same group than they do with others from other groups, even if they share a physical border. Other patterns that show up indicate what would seem natural—that people who speak the same language tend to send more e-mails to each other than to people who don’t. People in Great Britain for example, appear to send more e-mails to people in Australia than to people in other, much closer, European countries. Explore further
