Manchester United will be a threat with or without Rooney, warns Pellegrini

first_img1 Manuel Pellegrini expects Manchester United to be a major attacking threat to his Manchester City side with or without Wayne Rooney. The England striker, who has missed United’s last three games through suspension, is battling to be fit for Sunday’s Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium after suffering a foot injury. But Pellegrini insists it will not be a big boost to City if Rooney, the record goalscorer in Manchester derbies, does miss out.The Chilean, who oversaw 4-1 and 3-0 wins over United last season, said: “I think Rooney is a very important player for Manchester United but I think that big teams never depend on one player. They have enough important, creative players to replace him.”Pellegrini was speaking at a press conference to preview City’s Capital One Cup fourth-round tie against Newcastle on Wednesday.Because of that fixture, he said the derby was not really in his thoughts yet.He said: “We are thinking just about Newcastle. When we finish with Newcastle, we will start thinking about Manchester United.“We have three games in a row here at home in three competitions so I think it is very important to be thinking just about the Capital One Cup and after that we will start thinking about Manchester United.” Manuel Pelllegrini last_img read more
