Following Chris Cornell’s tragic death in 2017, his wife continues to speak up about mental health and substance abuse. This time she spoke in front of CongressAna YglesiasGRAMMYs Feb 27, 2019 – 5:36 pm Vicky Cornell, the widow of late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, visited Washington D.C. on Feb. 25 to testify before the Congressional Bipartisan Heroin And Opioid Task Force on the opioid crisis. She advocated for better addiction training for health care professionals in the face of the growing epidemic, underscoring that her husband’s death “was not inevitable.””Chris had a brain disease and a doctor who, unfortunately, like many, was not properly trained or educated on addiction,” Cornell told the task force, according to People. “We must integrate addiction treatment into our health care system—no more false narratives about the need to hit rock bottom, no more secret societies, no more shame—we must educate health care providers on how to treat addiction and best support recovery.”The rock icon was found dead by suicide in his hotel room in Detroit on May 17, 2017 following a Soundgarden concert. The toxicology report revealed prescription medications in his system, including Ativan, a benzodiazepine he was prescribed as a sleep aid, although the medical examiner said these drugs did not directly “contribute to the cause of death.”Vicky believes that her husband would still be here today if he had been treated by a doctor better educated in addiction, which he had struggled with for years before going sober.”He didn’t want to die. If he was of sound mind, I know he wouldn’t have done this… Addiction is a disease. That disease can take over you and has full power,” she told People in 2017. He was a rock icon, the Godfather of grunge and a creator of a movement. Former BCCI president Shashank Manohar, Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Rajiv Shukla and current BCCI president Anurag Thakur during a press conference in New DelhiIANSWhich of the companies will bag the Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights for the 2018 edition of the cricket league? That remains the major question as of now. According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as many as 18 companies have bought the ITT (Invitation To Tender) document made available for purchase by the cricket board from September 19 to October 18.The deadline for the submission of the bids is October 25.Facebook, Twitter, Reliance Jio, Sony Pictures Network India and Star India are some of the major companies who have picked up the tender document. While the broadcast rights for the Indian subcontinent is for 10 seasons (from 2018 to 2027), the IPL digital rights are valid for five seasons (from 2018 to 2022). The international media rights too are valid for five seasons.”This is going to be a historical moment for Indian cricket. I am pleased to see the overwhelming response from the media and technology companies for IPL Media Rights,” said BCCI president Anurag Thakur in a statement. “With the global trends of showcasing content on multiple platforms becoming increasingly important – TV, Internet and Mobile rights are up for grabs together this time.”To have as many as 18 prospective bidders in the fray reinstates the faith of market forces in Indian Premier League.”According to various reports, the two frontrunners to bag the IPL broadcast rights are Star India and Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI). It could also turn out that the one of these two major companies could pick up all the three media rights as the BCCI, according to sources, is willing to accept a “consolidated bid” from the TV broadcasters, where they need to put forward a one-bid figure for all three rights packages.Full list of companies who have bought the tender documentStar India Pvt. US president Donald Trump addresses the press during a visit to El Paso Regional Communications Centre in El Paso, Texas, on 7 August. Photo: AFPTrump consoled victims of mass shootings in Ohio and Texas on Wednesday, but despite promising a message of unity, he continued to rail at opponents while facing protests that his rhetoric on race has fuelled extremism.Trump flew to El Paso, Texas, where a self-declared white supremacist murdered 22 people last weekend at a Walmart heavily frequented by customers of Hispanic origin. He spent about an hour and a half at a hospital with staff and victims before he and his wife Melania were driven to the city’s emergency operations center to meet with police officers.Protesters gathered in the streets, watched by armed police. “Go home. You are NOT welcome here!” and “Trump hatred, racism not welcome here” read two of the signs.Similar scenes unfolded at an earlier stop in Dayton, Ohio, the site of another mass shooting over the weekend, in which nine people died.Pro-Trump protesters also took to the streets in both cities, illustrating the sense of division in the country ahead of next year’s election.Question of respectJournalists were mostly kept away from the Republican president, but in brief comments near the end of the two-city trip, Trump said he’d had an “amazing day.”Then after praising the “heroes” who confronted the killers, Trump used his one appearance before the cameras to reignite his feud with opponents who accuse him of racism and who had argued against him visiting either Ohio or Texas.”They shouldn’t be politicking today,” he said, calling Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, who questioned the use of Trump’s visit to Dayton, “very dishonest.”Apparently stung by the less-than-enthusiastic reception given to him by some leaders in both cities, Trump also made a point of insisting that he’d been treated warmly.”The love, the respect for the office of the presidency, it was — I wish you could there to see it,” he told journalists.Trump returned to that theme in a tweet announcing his departure from El Paso, saying: “The Fake News worked overtime trying to disparage me and the two trips, but it just didn’t work. The love, respect & enthusiasm were there for all to see.”Earlier, Trump’s social media director Dan Scavino tweeted that the president had been treated like a “Rock Star” in the Dayton hospital. The White House, which had kept away news photographers, saying that it didn’t want to treat the visit as a photo-op, subsequently published its own pictures showing Trump alongside medical staff, police and victims.Feuding consoler in chiefIn Dayton, Trump told shooting survivors that “you had God watching. I want you to know we’re with you all the way,” according to presidential spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham. But the traditional presidential role of consoler-in-chief blended awkwardly with accusations that Trump is himself to blame for rising tensions in the United States over race.Trump vehemently denies any racism but his choice of language, linking Hispanic migrants to murder, rape and invasion, is widely seen as at best incendiary.A famed border city, El Paso is at the center of Trump’s high-profile political campaign against illegal immigration and his keystone project of building walls along the Mexican frontier. The killer deliberately sought out the city, claiming to be stopping an “invasion” of illegal migrants — a term popularized by Trump repeatedly in campaign speeches. As recently as May, the president laughed and made a quip when a supporter at one of his rallies yelled that they should “shoot” illegal immigrants.Leading Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden gave a speech on Wednesday accusing Trump of fanning “the flames of white supremacy.”And Trump, who’d begun the day at the White House by insisting that his rhetoric “brings people together,” went on Twitter from Air Force One to respond.”Watching Sleepy Joe Biden making a speech. Sooo Boring!” Trump wrote, while flying between Dayton and El Paso.Gun control? Where Trump and his mostly leftist opponents agree is on the unambiguous designation of the two events as terrorism.Massacres by mostly lone gunmen are all but routine in the United States, where guns are easy to obtain legally and mass killings have taken on a sort of cult status in extreme circles.Hardline defenders of gun ownership have long resisted the portrayal of such tragedies as anything more than random, localized events. But Trump on Monday said he had told the FBI to treat such crimes as “domestic terrorism.”On Wednesday, Trump also said that Republicans and Democrats were “close” to agreeing on stronger background checks for people buying firearms — a measure opposed by gun rights lobbyists.”I think background checks are important. I don’t want to put guns into the hands of mentally unstable people or people with rage or hate,” Trump said. However, he said “there is no political appetite” for banning military style assault weapons, which are widely available and are often chosen by mass killers.
(PhysOrg.com) — While compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are currently the primary alternative to incandescent light bulbs, a company from Seattle predicts that its own novel light bulbs will eventually replace CFLs and LEDs. Vu1 (“view one”) Corporation has been working on its electron stimulated luminescence (ESL) bulbs, and has recently released a demo video (below). On the other hand, LEDs don’t contain hazardous materials like mercury, and can last for up to 50,000 hours. However, their heat dissipation requirements make them more expensive than other bulbs, with a projected retail price of about $40 each.In contrast, ESLs don’t contain hazardous substances and should cost about $20, or the equivalent of a dimmable CFL reflector bulb, according to Vu1. Similar to CFLs, ESLs use 65% less energy than incandescent bulbs, and last for up to 6,000 hours, or about four times the lifespan of incandescents. Other advantages of ESLs include a warm color temperature similar to incandescent light, as well as the ability to be turned on instantly and be fully dimmable. Vu1 plans to begin manufacturing ESLs by the end of the year, and hopes to market the bulb starting in mid-2010. Initially, the company will launch reflector-shaped bulbs, which are used in recessed lighting. Later they hope to expand into other bulb forms such as standard A bulbs and tubes. More information: www.vu1.comvia: CNet Crave© 2009 PhysOrg.com Citation: Company Claims ESLs to be the Future of Light Bulbs (w/ Video) (2009, September 16) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2009-09-company-esls-future-bulbs-video.html Explore further ‘Light within a light’ offers CFL efficiency with incandescent bulb shape ESL technology works by firing electrons at phosphor, which then glows. As Vu1 explains, the technology is similar to that used in cathode ray tubes and TVs. However, the bulbs have several improvements, such as in uniform electron distribution, energy efficiency, phosphor performance and manufacturing costs. “CRT and TV technology is based on delivering an electron ‘beam’ and then turning pixels on and off very quickly,” the company explains on its website. “ESL technology is based on uniformly delivering a ‘spray’ of electrons that illuminate a large surface very energy efficiently over a long lifetime.”With ESLs, Vu1 hopes to overcome some of the challenges faced by CFLs and LEDs, the two lighting technologies considered to have the most potential in the post-incandescent era. As the company explains, CFLs’ biggest problem is that they contain about 5 milligrams of mercury. If not recycled properly – or if they’re accidentally broken – CFLs release mercury into the air or groundwater. In addition, some people find the CFLs’ cooler colors less pleasing than the warmer tones of incandescent bulbs. Vu1’s conceptual design for its R-30 bulb. Credit: Vu1.
