You see John Graham is a man who loves Brussel Sprouts, growing them that is.John is the second generation of his family to grow sprouts commercially on the family farm in Ballyholey, near Raphoe. Some Ballyholey sprouts“We start sowing seed in March and then plant the young plants outside around May”, John goes on to explain, “This year has been a challenge to get them them going, especially early in the summer when it was cold, the growth was slow, but they’ve ripened up now and are looking good”, John laughing adds “We don’t do any spraying with them, once they’re planted its survive or be ploughed in!”John grows around 2 acres of Sprouts which he sells into the wholesale market and through the Ballyholey Farm Shop and at his popular stall at the Letterkenny Artisan MarketHe has admitted surprise that already people are buying them.“We chopped a few trees [name given to the entire plant] and just had them on display the other week at the market just to say to folks that we’d have them ready for christmas, and they sold right away and already we’re selling around 25kg of sprouts per week at the Market and another 25kg in the shop” John puts this down to the move towards seasonal foods among celebrity chefs and this in turn is encouraging house old cooks to think seasonal, and traditionally sprouts were an early winter staple food, which sadly for many, turned into a once a year culinary disaster.“Soggy sprouts sadly is what many folks grew up with, but when you go to a restaurant and you get sprouts fried with bacon and butter you realise what a tasty veg they are” adds John.John adds “Folks are so puzzled when they see the Sprout Tree, many don’t realise that’s how they grow, so we even put a video on our youtube channel of me picking sprouts”So the question is…..Do you love or dread the though of Sprouts for christmas???Link to Youtube clip Planting Sprouts way back in MayMEET THE RAPHOE MAN ALREADY ‘SPROUTING’ ABOUT CHRISTMAS! was last modified: November 10th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:donegalRaphoesproutslast_img
